Ma'am, we sell water, we don't give it away

Let's not get down to the same level as the guy in the store, and see what we are trying to achieve. We want to live in a neighborhood, where people are nice and treat others with respect. Whether it is to give a cup of water to someone, or to share the negative feedback with the store owner.
Posting this thread in the store window, or reporting the owner to 311 puts us into the same category of nasty. And there will be nothing but negative reaction to that. Why not just print this thread, take it to the store, and say, that this is something you came across, and think that they might find this feedback interesting. And it's doesn't have to come from the original poster, who might still be a bit bitter. Anyone of us can just print this article and bring it to the store.
I can do it, even though it a little bit out of the way for me. If anyone lives/works next to this place - may be you can volunteer, and do a good deed.

I supose they could charge you afew pennies for the cup. Just because we are a country obsessed with bottled water (a gizzioino dollar industry) doesn't mean that a place can't give you some water on a hot day. hey in a sit down restaurant they still ask if you want tap water (often said with an attitude on the part of the waiter )or bottled whatever.

I am on your side with being put off by this incident.

since calling 311 won't help with any of the horrible things you mentioned, maybe they should do something while being paid to sit their all day and tell us what they cannot help with -
Thanks for sharing your story. I'm never going in there again.

I would be really, really surprised if there was such a law.
Me too!

I don't understand the point of this comment. Are we supposed to not talk about anything except the war in Iraq, homlessness, food and gas prices? That would be very boring indeed. Any other topics we should stop talking about? -
Jamzer, I believe it means you are supposed to call the cops on this illegal war in Iraq.

Agreed. However, with all the nit picking of this community, I cannot imagine where this would end. "Can I have ice?" "Is this water filtered?" "Can I have a lid to go?" I mean, Park Slopers are a notoriously finicky lot, and sometimes I feel like we have dug the hole we are in with poor customer service.
Otherwise I don't disagree with your suggestion that someone print out a copy of this thread and give it to the store.
Perhaps they'll finally realize that making fun of their customers is a very poor idea.
"I got sick from this water! I'm gonna sue!" -

I just called to report it. For some reason they asked for my home address (like that is relevant????).
I think I hear the sirens now. I'll let everyone know if they make an arrest. In the mean time - discuss cancer (I assume that is ok BrooklynGigCenter). -
I am worried about Jamzer. By now he's probably being held incommunicado at Guantanamo Bay. That's not good... see this year's Oscar winning documentary feature, "Taxi to the Dark Side".

The point of my comment is that there are bigger things going on, and get over yourself being treated poorly. You're healthy, living in a nice apartment in the best neighborhood in NYC - what are you really complaining about? Count your blessings and be glad you're not the mean guy.
I would love to hear a tape of the call to 311 whining because some mean guy wouldn't give her a cup of water. The look on the face of the operator would be precious. -

pretty sweeping statements, don't you think? -

I would hope for your sake every one of them is true, many times over. -
but you don't know...
since i wasn't the one who you were answering, i can't tell you. but to assume that someone living here is in a nice apartment is a big assumption. to assume that someone is healthy is a big assumption.
you can't judge a book, as they say, by its cover -
Brooklyngigcenter... We try not to be too nasty to each other here. Hey, sometimes we fail at that. Brooklynpotter made a "nice" comment on your comment. You are getting a little nasty with your thoughts.
Yeah there are giant problems in the world but that doesn't mean to be stellar people we have to go through life without complaining about rude interactions with shop owners. -
We could totally turn this into a conversation about the privitization of water. This is a big issue, even if it started with a small, local example.
-
-
Or worse, T Boone Pickens could buy the water underneath us and then try to sell it to Philadelphia, leaving us wondering where our water went.

This also reminds me somewhat of the musical "Urinetown", although OP wanted to drink water, not use it for a flush.
Finally, I also remember hearing that a restaurant had to provide you a "courtesy cup" of water upon request. That was years ago but a friend of mine from the Bronx would go into McDonald's all the time just to request the cup and I never saw him refused, although the cup was very small. -
BrooklynGigCenter,
One of my favorite things about this neighborhood is the sense of community I have both living and working here. I know I am lucky to be here, and yes I am healthy and I do have a lovely apartment, but I think that to say that I should not mention these other things because there are bigger problems in the world is a little ridiculous. I mean, by that standard I guess we should just ignore 95% of the posts on this board.
Along the lines of being a small community, I just think people should know when a local shop owner acts like an ass, that's all. No big deal, and I'm not going to call 311. On one hand - maybe I should "get over it" (as Mistybuttons so eloquently suggested), but on the other IT'S JUST WATER and when you're serving food I really don't see the point in going out of your way tp refuse it to a customer.
Either way, it was just a passing thought. I'm over it.

RockerGirl, I hear you. I love posts that say "there are more important things in the world." True!
So how dare you complain about a cup of water when the slow subway service is more important?
And how can you waste time complaining about subway service when Atlantic Yards is more important?
And how dare you complain about Atlantic Yards when the City's overall economy is more important?
And how dare you complain about the City's economy when the whole country is suffering a downturn?
And how dare you complain about a lousy economic downturn when the Middle East is a powder keg waiting to explode?
And how dare you waste time complaining about the Middle East when crazy Kim Jung Il has an arsenal of nukes?
And how dare you complain about Kim's arsenal of nukes when Africa is rife with AIDS?
And how dare you complain about AIDS in Africa when global warming is going to kill every single living thing on Earth?
You've got some nerve, I tells ya! :-# -

Regardless, very stupid way to do business.
It seems like a courteous thing to do. I know that there _is_ such a law requiring free cups of water in Phoenix, AZ, but hey, it is a desert. And people die and stuff. I was always under the impression that it was an unusual law though, and not typical of other places. *shrug* -

Thanks for the heads up. I will make sure never to go there, unless the place is burning down and I can help kindle the fire.

No, this is screwed up. Every place that sells food should provide water. If they want to charge you five cents for a cup, fine, whatever, although they shouldn't. What're they going to lose a few bucks a day that way?
It's courteous, it's the right thing to do, and it treats the customer--who just paid out the ass for a mediocre bagel--with a modicum of respect. Water is a necessity. It should be free and provided happily. Otherwise, I too would leave. -
Brooklyn Baby Daddy,
I read your blog.. as expected it reads like you are the first couple in American history to pop out a child. Congrats.
I have to agree with you, however, water is a necessity. And I agree, customers should be treated with respect.
The solution is simple... no water, no customer. She could have demanded a refund if it was that important to her. She could have filled up a water bottle at home, she could have brought a water bottle and filled it up in the bathroom, she could have filled it up in the bathroom next door, she could have asked nicer or pleaded her case a bit more, she could have begged for a glass of water like cartoon character in the desert.
Personally, I would have pissed on the floor and "yeah... well how about you drink this you Nazi mother-f'er. -
Drunken Revival, your couth and charm have never been as acute as they are today....
Howdy, Stranger!
