Have the video gamers dug up their very own blood diamond?
A friend just pointed this out...
Has the video game industry dug up its very own blood diamond?
According to a report by activist site Toward Freedom, for the past decade the search for a rare metal necessary in the manufacturing of Sony's Playstation2 game console has fueled a brutal conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

You know, it's so sad.
These countries are so rich with various in-demand resources that could provide a solid base of employment (and related manufacturing and services industries offshoots) for their populations to finally break the cycle of poverty and emerge into more stable, equitable societies, but...
Warlords get the first bite at everything, leaving nothing but servitude or death for the rest.
Meh. Sorry for whine. Just sucks. -
Is this 'rare metal' only used in PS2s?
Methinks there are various metals being mined in Congo, and fueling conflicts, that are used in all computer (chips). Including the ones we're all on right now. -
^ the article does make a case for the big spike in demand (and resulting awfulness) coming with PS2.
