Who's the Best Cell Phone Service Provider in NYC Area?

You have to go with the big gorilla. Verizon.
Best coverage by far. -
Agree with Verizon, BUT... in NYC especially, coverage can vary a lot even neighborhood to neighborhood. If you know specifically where you're likey to use the phone most (i.e., where you'll live and work), best to ask people who frequent those neighborhoods. I dropped AT&T a few years back because I had problems getting a signal in midtown and in my apartment in Park Slope -- but I know others who swear by it.

Don't know if this info is in time to be relevant, but I have had Cingular for awhile and it's been great.
Avoid T-Mobile. I had them for 2 years and waited for coverage (esp. in the Slope) to improve and it never did.
Plus people now figure that they will get cosmic rays or something from the arrays, so bad coverage situations ain't gonna get better. -

I've had this same problem with T-Mobile in Park Slope! Very strange... Otherwise it seems to have the best plans....

i have both cingular and tmobile. i would go with tmobile best in most areas of nyc i travel in. i drive for a living.

I rarely got a good signal with TM. I have Cingular now - much better plan & coverage. I can't speak for Verizon, but I can say Cingular national coverage is pretty good and reasonably priced. -

their customer service SUCKS rocks...but have to say the actual phone service surpasses their competitors. Hands DOWN. -
Sprint is okay... prices are alright... customer service not too good. But it always has service everywhere.

They have really bad rates, but Verizon has a MUCH better signal than AT&T in NYC.
That said, if you travel across the country, AT&T has best coverage throughout the US -
Verizon has the best signal in NY hands down. I hated Sprint when I had it. I've never had Cingular or T-Mobile, but my friend canceled her T-Mobile service within a week of getting it due to bad service (she couldn't even get a signal in the store she bought the phone from).
I've never had a problem with national service with Verizon, but can't say I've compared it exhaustively at all. I can say that I was skiing in Taos, NM, and at the top of the mountain I was the only one with a signal in my group, including a bunch of native New Mexico residents. -

Cingular is pretty amazing - I like their service a lot. for the GSM carriers, I think it's probably the best.

did you have problems with Cingular this week?
I didn't notice it earlier in the week when they were having network problems, but my girlfriend's phone didn't work most of yesterday even when mine did...
we both have cingular. -
i also had sprint in chicago, and it was horrible when i came here. i was hanging out of people's kitchen windows to make phone calls while they were using their phones on the couch. IF i got a signal in my building at all, i had to be careful to not move even half an inch during a conversation, which led to major neck cramps.
i switched to verizon. it's way better. -

Cingular had a massive network crash on Wednesday, I think. but service was fully restored by Wednesday evening. I turned my phone off and on to clear glitches and it's been fine since then. -
Cingular is union, unlike most other cell phone providers. Not a factor for some maybe, but it is for me and their coverage has always been fine for me and I've never had any probs w their customer service either.

I have had Sprint for years and have no problems-I use my phone inside my home all the time.

Hi All,
Revisiting an old thread.....I am so sick of Verizon. They used to have great coverage and service and they have been my provider for years. They are more expensive than anyone else but I don't feel the quality of service has kept up with their prices.Has anyone tried any of the pay one price phone plans like Metro PCS or Boost? Unlimited talk text web without a
contract soundsvery attractive but do they deliver?
