Nope - passed by last night on way to Uncle Louie's - there are very big crates just inside the door - might be kitchen stuff??
  • According to someone who was working there yesterday when I passed by, it's opening on Saturday 7/26.
  • And according to the sign in front of it, they're opening on Friday at 11am now.

Not that I'm waiting or anything...
  • anyone know if they deliver?
  • Yes, they do (not sure of a minimum, but it's probably the standard $10).
  • I had a pretty terrible burger at Two Guys once when I was a kid. I'm hoping this will be better what with an extra three guys on the job.
  • [quote=8thandPrez]Forget Five Guys. I want an In-n-Out in Park Slope. Grilled cheese animal style and fries animal style. *SO* good. I think 4th Ave would be a great location, perfect for the whole California, car-culture vibe. Maybe it could dislodge the McDonald's.

In-n-out! That might actually get me to eat meat!

    Best line of the week!
[For those who don't know, Two Guys was a discount store chain based in NJ that did a lot of tv advertising. Amazingly their successor company Vornado owns a huge commercial real estate portfolio, including most of the Penn Station area].

And the one near me really did have a lunch counter/cafeteria that served some pretty terrible food - think hot dogs that have been on those rollers just forever and canned chili in a big warming pot. I never actually had a burger there, and for that I'm glad.

    I'll give 5 guys a shot.
  • 5 Guys is open for business!

I stopped in about 7 PM tonight. The place was jammed with people. The many staffers behind the counter were working their asses off trying to keep up with the orders. Surprisingly, notwithstanding the multitudes and the pressure, each of the 3 staffers I dealt with was cheerful and seemed anxious to be helpful. For example, when I picked up my order, I remembered that I had neglected to ask to have chopped onions added to my hamburger. They graciously gave me a bunch of chopped onions wrapped in tinfoil together with the rest of my order.

Incidentally, I overheard someone ask whether they could get water to drink, instead of soda. The server said, "of course!" and directed them to someplace in the restaurant (I didn't pay attention to where it was) where water was available.

The setup is a little odd. You order and pay at the front counter and then you go stand in the long line (at least tonight) on the side until they call your number and you then go all the way back to pick up your food.

There are no trays, and no salt, condiments, or napkins on the tables. They give you your order in a large paper bag and you take that to a table. There are napkins in the bag, but no salt or pepper. If you want ketchup, you have to ask for it, and then they give it to you in a tiny paper cup.

I ordered 1000 calories worth of bacon cheeseburger (eat your heart out, Carnivore!) with lettuce and tomato and ketchup. I also ordered a "regular" cup of french fries.

The fries were quite tasty but were not crispy at all. They were a little greasy. Well worth eating, but the "regular" serving was actually excessively large (at least when eating a mountainous cheeseburger). A sign at the back of the store proclaims that the fries are cooked in 100% peanut oil. No one allergic to nuts should eat the fries.

The bacon cheeseburger was delicious. I was totally happy with it. My only quibble was that the bun (untoasted) was not solid enough to stand up to the abuse of all that grease in one place... it fell apart in my hands, and the two beef patties did their best to slide in opposite directions.

Cost of burger and fries came to a little over $11.

All in all, a worthy edition to the neighborhood.
  • You probably know by now that a "cheeseburger" is actually a double and the "Little Cheeseburger" is the single pattie - I love that ;-)

Here's Adam Kuban's review on SE/A Hamburger Today (Adam lives on 5th Avenue) - btw locating across from Methodist is a stroke of either genius or luck... http://aht.seriouseats.com/archives/2008/07/five-guys-park-slope-brooklyn-nyc-opens-bay-ridge-location-too.html

According to "A Hamburger Today", no, they don't deliver. Alas.
  • the real question is-
how DOES this compare to in and out? My boyfriend is a hardcore in and out burger fan and complains about damn near everything else...anyone care to compare? Is it worth dragging him to or will he be complaining?
  • Do they do veggie burgers?
  • Went Friday, very good; although I had in Philly before.
In N Out Burger is still better.
  • A little bit of both I would say. I like how he writes "it looks like a casting call for Scrubs". Picture of the burger looks great.

  • DO WANT!!!

  • OK - just got back- ordered that exact same puppy pictured above - which from now on I'm calling the Kubano- after Adam Kuban, from whom I got the idea.

I loved the burger and I loved the fries - fresh cut from today's potatoes and dropped in the fryer - skins still on, piping hot - just great. And because it's sort of a Five Guys thing - they give you copious amounts of fries - at least enough for 2 people, so keep that in mind.

Couple of factoids - the burger is 80% lean and 20% fat - a nice sensible mixture. Also if you order two toppings or less you get 2 slices of American cheese, 3 toppings or more just 1 slice. IMHO 2 slices is unnecessary and makes the burger too cheesy. Just tell the cashier if you want only 1 slice.

Bottom line - it's a delicious burger, and in the absence of fabulous burgers in the slope (my apologies to Bonnies and Dram Shop and Stone Park) it now ranks in the top tier of neighborhood burgers.

    Go, soon :D/

In n Out is better, both taste-wise and in the sense that you don't feel like death 20 minutes after eating an In n Out burger and fries (which is an unfortunate side effect of Five Guys, at least for me).

That said, Five Guys does make a great burger. I just don't think it's advisable to do that sort of thing to your gastrointestinal tract more than once every few months or so.

And to think, workers at Methodist Hospital are going to start treating this place like a regular lunch option... good thing the cardiac unit is close by.

Too true I'm afraid - right after I wrote the post above I had a major "slider" attack! That will be enough to keep me away for about a month.
  • I tried it tonight. The thing actually looks much better than it tastes. The hand-formed patties are appealingly irregular, and the side selection is good (although no jalapenos right now due to salmonella fears). I also appreciate that the regular burger is a double ( single is a "little hamburger"). However it really needed the toppings, because the beef wasn't as juicy, flavorful or "beefy" as I was hoping for after all the hype. I got a regular (double) bacon cheeseburger with grilled onions, pickles, lettuce, mayo and ketchup. It was tasty, but I think the beef itself wasn't as tasty as the burger at say Soda Bar. The fries were nice, but I would have liked them more cooked. A few fries mixed into our order from a previous batch that maybe got refried or something were much more well done and absolutely delicious. If I could get a whole order like that, I'd come back for that alone. Next time, I'll see if I can order my fries well done. If anyone else is successfully able to get them to do this, I hope they'll post about it here!

Oh, and as soon as I got home after eating, I passed out for about 2 hours. This was after sleeping all day, since I'm working nights this weekend.
  • After my bacon cheeseburger and fries at 5 Guys, I had a major attack of stomach acid. The first one I can remember... I needed three Tums to quiet it down.
  • Dudes, listen up. The Meat God has spoken.
  • My wife and I went Saturday. Sheb had the little cheeseburger and I had the hamburger. Damn tasty. I love the irregular patties and the meat was seasoned well. The fries were a bit too soggy but my wife loved them. We got the large fry and it was huge. I want another one.
