Black and white cat on Berkeley
This B/W cat was wandering on Berkeley Pl. (6th - 7th Ave.) in early May – it looked as if it had recently been abandoned or lost. It was well-fed, clean and clearly domesticated rather than feral. Like many other people on our street, I was thinking about adopting it. I was petting it once and it bit me, and I saw the same happen to another guy with a stroller just in front of my window a few days later. I just thought that the cat was frightened and nervous, not being used to street life, so I didn’t think anything of it. However recently one of my medical colleagues told me that I should have watched the cat’s health for 10 days to make sure that it didn’t have rabies. Rabies does exist in NYC, and moreover, there’s no good reason to assume that this cat was originally from Brooklyn. It could have been come from any of the other boroughs or NY environs where rabies is prevalent.
Since I didn’t watch the cat for 10 days, I am now extremely worried.
I would be incredibly grateful if the owner, anyone who adopted this cat, or anyone who knows where it is now would let me know that it is alive and well. I just want to know whether the cat is still healthy. Maybe the guy who was also bitten was more careful than me and reported the incident or watched the cat afterwards - if you are reading this post, any news would be welcome. It would really put my mind at rest – the rabies incubation period can be as long as a year, and I can’t worry any longer.

Oh, he's cute.
You don't have rabies. Can domesticated animals have rabies? Yes, but it is very, very rare, and I highly doubt you would have gotten close enough to a rabid animal to pet it. He's just scared.
The thing you'd have to worry about is infection. If you get bit (or scratched) by an animal, make sure you wash the area thoroughly and flush it out really, really well.
If you call and report the cat, I can almost guarantee it will be put down. The test for rabies is done on the brain after the animal is put down. So, in order to prove the cat doesn't have rabies, you have to kill it. -
I second Flexi's response. There have only been about 3 cases of humans contracting rabies in NY State over the last sixty years, all of which I believe came from bat bites.
Also the typical incubation period for rabies is 4-6 weeks, so if you were bitten in May the chances of having it would be even slimmer. If you're still worried, though, perhaps see a doctor?
You have a much greater risk of getting a bacterial infection from a cat bite. You'd know you had that because your hand would have quickly become red and swollen.
