Little Bird
So I'm sitting outside of Hope & Anchor in Red Hook yesterday and a little boy with his grandfather walk by. The grandfather had a little baby bird in his hand, and it turned out that they had found it on the sidewalk. The grandfather said that they spent a while looking for the mom and the nest but couldn't find anything. Rather than let it get eaten, they decided to pick it up but had no idea what to do. I mentioned that I've taken care of a bunch of baby birds and they asked me to take him.
His name is Herman and he is living in a box in our apt. I'm feeding him my family's seekrit baby bird recipe: dry cat food soaked in water and mashed with banana. So far he has actually asked for food only once - he seems to be pretty scared still. But that one time he gobbled it off my pinky, mouth up and wide open, chirping and flapping his little wings. Other times I just put some food or a drop of water on his beak and he eventually nibbles it.
The cat doesn't know yet. I don't know how she's missed the chirping.

Chirp!

for a tiny little bird, herman has some very large lungs. i imagine you can hear his chirping in PH!
-
Thank you so much BG! And Little Bird- you're going to be just fine. You're in very capable (albeit huge!) hands. I can't wait to watch you grow up!

my mom would stuff her baby bird food mush into a syringe (big hole, no needle!) and it was a great way to feed the little orphans.
pictures? -
we have only the avatar pic because my camera is old and doesn't do close ups, mr demille. however, new camera arrives in a few days and we'll give herman a photo spread. he can be the brooklynian mascot

hey, don't say that about my boyfriend!
-
rut roh. How has Harriet not caught on to this feathered interloper yet?
-
curious question. she seems to be hiding and skulking around; i know she has to have heard him chirp because it's so loud it could wake the dead. don't know what her MO is.
we've placed little herman in a box we're keeping up very high where harriet-kitty can't get to him, but she's lurking and, i'm convinced, lying in wait like puddy-cat biding time till she can get her tweety bird.

Hmmm....I hope this story has a happy ending (and I don't mean that in the "massage parlor way" :-) )
-
Check your cats hearing. My cat would have been all over the bird by now. Its a great thing your doing. We need more people like you around.
-
she has crazy good hearing, but i can't figure out why she's ignoring the bird
-
She's waiting for him to get plump and juicy!
-
Yeah, keep an eye out for any packages arriving from Williams Sonoma with cat-sized barbeque utensils.

I'm sorry to have to tell everyone that Herman didn't make it through the night last night. He stopped eating yesterday, and last night when I picked him up I could tell he was on his way out. I think it's possible that he had some kind of internal injuries from his fall.
We will bury him in the park later today. Sad. -
Aww. RIP little birdie. Thanks for trying, BigGuy.
-
Your new nickname has been revoked.
-
Well, I know you did better than anyone else could have, BG. The bird gods are smiling upon you.
-
Saving little birds = never a happy ending, but you did a good thing by trying
-
Awww. That sucks. Could have been shock too, that helped push him out his mortal coil.
-
I know, I was worried about shock as well. Thanks everyone.
-
i'm very sad
-
awww, poor little bird! May he rest in peace.

I knew that poor bird would die. All cute wild animals that people try to save and post images of online always die if I read the thread. The worse one was the baby squirrel. Major suckiness.
We will bury him in the park later today. Sad.

Poor lil' birdie.

I've been avoiding this thread until now, thinking "Little Bird" was some new eatery I couldn't care less about....but now I finally caved & read it, and wish I hadn't.
Howdy, Stranger!
