i think they put fun flavors in stuff, or make medicine into gummy bears, or some such thing. Maybe they'll have classes? Or sell kids eyeglasses?
-
check out the last paragraph of http://www.kidsrx.com/aboutus.html
"We accept all insurance plans, offer fast free delivery and fill prescriptions for pet medications.”

Gowanus Lounge is now confirming that yes, Kids RX is opening a location at the former 2nd Street Cafe space. Alas.
-
let me see if i've got this right: a kid's pharmacy is going in, 2-or-3-doors away from where an ice cream shop went out of business? does this make sense?

The pharmacies around here put flavors into kid's prescriptions now-not sure about making them into gummy bears though. What sort of classes would a pharmacy have? -
It makes sense given the over diagnoses of ADHD and Autism and whatnot. Designer kids drugs for LD/ADD/AHDH?Aspergers that taste like bubblegum hooray!!!!!! Otherwise I know a few loudmouthed PS kids that could use some valium!
-
did you all look at the website?
it's not just a pharmacy...that's one tiny portion of it.
it's also books, baby items, a baby registry, gift baskets, environmentally friendly household items, vitamins, skin care, hair care and dental care.
i personally think it will be a huge hit in that location.
and i'm not even a baby person and it sounds useful.
(it was also voted the best pharmacy in nyc in 2007 by new york magazine) -
I'm totally and utterly stunned - I have no words to express whatever the hell it is that I am experiencing right this moment upon discovering this kidsrx inform...................

Just an FYI its not all about ADHD - NYC has a high number of children who are asthmatic as well as suffer from diabetes. There are many parents who can just barely afford health insurance and the cheapest ones will not cover certain medications unless they are ordered on-line and sometimes if you forget - it can mean life or death for you child. -

How will this pharmacy solve the problem of un or under insured parents of asthmatic children? -
Sorry Carmen let me clear it up

I don't use this pharmacy my co-worker swears by this place because they are able to give you doses of medications in easy to use forms (i.e, lollipops, etc.). She said its nice to have people who are specifically geared and knowledgeable about most childhood sicknesses/diseases. This pharmacy carries the medications that are pretty much only available through mail order (such as Child Health Plus covered meds) like nebulizer inserts, inhalers, and individually tailored doses of the common diabetic medications and of course if you happen to not get that package or if you forget to order its a lifesaver to be able to get it right away.
I also wanted to make a point that its not only ADD/ADHD affect Brooklyn's children. -

I don't buy it. I got nebulizer inserts at my local pharmacy (Palma) and kids don't need candy flavored medicine (talking as a parent here). Seems like dressed up commericalism to me. I'm sure it is a nice place and I wish them well. I guess it is a good thing that it is not CVS, but I just really like Frank and the guys at Palma. I hope this does not hurt them, because I can't take A&S and Palma closing in the same year.

I don't wish them well. I think it's ridiculous to have a pharmacy geared towards kids! I'm not that surprised though since any google check shows you that millions of kids are being prescribed psychotropic drugs in addition to all the other drugs they're given like ritalin, ADD etc.
Medicine in lollipops? Medicine is NOT supposed to be fun or taste good. Why confuse kids. Good lord. I feel sorry for kids today. -

I think that's a bit of a stretch, don't you think?
Regardless, I think this will fit right in in a neighborhood which already has a bakery for dogs. -
I honestly don't get it -- virtually all drugs approved for use in children already come in pediatric formulations (ie, sweet liquid vs pills or capsules). I get inhalers and all associated equipment for my kid at Neergaard, and the 5th Av one is open 24 hours with, I believe, a pharmacist there at all times. That's saved my bacon more than once, let me tell you. What Rx's do children need that can't be gotten at Neergaard, Palma, or another local place?

i find it to be uniquely new york that people seem to think that EVERY new store, restaurant or bar should cater to them.
so there's a children's pharmacy opening up. big deal. it's one store of 100's in park slope. clearly by the fact that they've had a location on hudson street in the west village for a couple years (with probably double or triple rent than here on 7th avenue) means they do have a customer base. their distinction for best pharmacy in new york (by nymag) in 2007 says something also. to me, anyway.
no, i will never set foot in this place most likely.
but i also prefer having something on that corner than either 2nd street cafe (which was pretty mediocre, in my opinion and not somewhere i ever planned to eat at again) or the vacant storefront which has been sitting almost a year.
not EVERY single store needs to be for YOU! -
beljzm, not sure whether that was directed at me, but I don't have any beef with this store. And if it was directed at me, you didn't answer my question.
Actually, my guess is that, like Neergaard, they'll straddle the line between "pharmacy" and "chatchka/toy store" and become a destination for kids on the way home from school, tempted by toy displays in the windows. Just a guess. But I don't know how else they'll make their rent. -
sorry...no, that was not directed at anyone in particular.
i'm not sure how they'll pay their rent either, but i say the same thing when i walk by the other 25 children's "boutiques," dog bakeries and thai restaurants in the slope.
maybe they got a deal on the rent since it's been sitting there so long unoccupied?
maybe they do a large online business?
maybe the gift baskets, books and baby registry brings in most of the income?
i don't know, but this place seems more of a one stop shop than some of the other places i walk by. -
belzjm wrote: maybe they got a deal on the rent since it's been sitting there so long unoccupied?
I dont know either the new tenant or the LL,
but in general that statement is unlikely.
Its not an apt that you can just raise the rent to market price next year.
Its a 5 to 10 year committment. With pre determined annual increases.
It also takes a good month for lawyers to argue over clauses, and "lease out" could mean that 2 months go by only for the lawyers not to be able to agree over a language issue in the lease so , dead deal.
heres the math for you
IF the rent is ,lets pick a number and assume it "fair market value"
$10k a month,
and its been vacant oh say 6 months,
LL loss = 60k
so LL panics .drops rent to 8k
rents it immediately,
LL loss = minimum of 250k over 10 years.
or
2 years worth of rent .
Just trying to give you some insight to the thought process and breakeven point. -
thanks garfunky. makes total sense.
i guess i was grasping for straws, since i'm confused how so many places in park slope manage to stay open with such astronomical rents.
i try my best to buy everything i can in the neighborhood to support these local businesses, so i get slightly hot under the collar when i hear people trashing things before they've even opened. -

They make alot more $ then they let on.
for example,
I was shocked to learn a bar i occasion in queens turns 22k a daybelzjm wrote: i try my best to buy everything i can in the neighborhood to support these local businesses, so i get slightly hot under the collar when i hear people trashing things before they've even opened.
I'm with you on that
The whole "walk a mile in the other person shoes"
before one totally trashes another seems to have been lost on many members of this board. -
A friend of mine was talking about how much money they made this one night, I thought he said "$6,000.00" He actually said "$6,000.00 MORE than the other nights." (Insert jealous emoticon here)
Some people make money locally (bars) but you'd be surprised at how many of the little stores struggle to get by; figuring out exactly how many zagnuts you need to sell to pay the rent; laying off employees; not running the a/c, etc..
I shop locally and I mean it. I go to the hardware stores and am relieved I don't have to go to Target. For anything. And I don't.
Kids RX is perfect for Park Slope. Get em with the toys, and then sell them your "Eco Marketing" so they leave feeling "green." Everybody wins. -
either they changed the business going in there, or they changed the name, because it was definitely a different sign in the window when i passed by on the bus this morning. don't remember the new name unfortunately. anyone know?

I snapped a cellphone camera pic this afternoon...

haha yeah, it definitely didn't have the "pure essentials" and "n-grown-ups-too" last time i saw it. maybe they heard the complaints?

MeredithB wrote: Well, good luck if it's a pharmacy. They are asking $14,000 per month!!!!
$14,000 is cheap for that location. I'd be willing to bet it's is more than 2x that amount.
