DOG OWNERS BE AWARE
If you walk your dog in Prospect Park in the morning keep your eyes open for a guy who has two pitbulls that WILL attack your dog. He lets them roam on a leash but doesn't hold the leash. He has at least two of the most vicious pitbulls I have ever seen and I am convinced they are used as fighting dogs and for protection. He hangs around the Vail of Cashmere area.
My dog and two other dogs have been attacked twice already. I am now on a mission and will be filing a report with the police (not that I expect they can do anything but if nothing else to have it on record)
Just be aware!

I experienced this guy yesterday morning. A few of us went to the Vail area to let our dogs jump in the clean water and he yelled at us about how dogs are supposed to be in Long Meadow not over there.
Yet, he was there. His dogs were practically frothing at the mouth to get at our dogs and we were fairly far from him, our dogs ignoring them. He was doing nothing to stop them from their excitement but yelling at us. I've never seen a dog as dog aggressive in the park as these two.
Someone braver than me needs to convince him that muzzles would go a long way with those dogs. -
someone braver than i am need to go into the park with a camera and take a pic of this guy and his dogs!

Mace all them bitches...
-
Just mace the guy. Not the dogs' fault he's an asshole and trained them that way.

yeesh
Someone with first person experience of this might want to email someone at FIDO http://fidobrooklyn.com/
They try to moderate dog activity in the park. They don't have enforcement powers or anything, but at least they try to deal with all the dog related stuff that happens in Prospect Park.
Or go to their coffee klatch in the park this Saturday morning 8-9am and talk to folks...
It's their 10th Anniversary

What's the problem? They're "on leash" -- LOL

okay, dug up an old thread on this -- here's the phone numbers.
The Parks Dept has their own enforcement that works inside the parks -- you might get somewhere with them quicker than calling the regular NYPDpitu wrote:
I think FIDO does good advocacy work, and provides extra waste bins; they should not be expected to be the dog police.
You can report dog bites to the precinct and to the parks dept, but it takes persistence.
When my dog was bit, I ended up filing a report with Sgt Johnson at the Brooklyn Parks Enforcement Patrol Office. 718 437-1351
At the time I asked permission to post their number here, although you can also get them (eventually, if you're lucky) by calling 311.
It's important to keep track of problems, so please call if you are involved in a serious dog bite.
The more specific info you have, the better. Treat it like a car accident . . .
Here's info off an old thread on the subject

just a little follow up
dog law info here:
http://www.urbanhound.com/houndLaw/ShowAnswer.asp?QID=126
"Finally, if you're bitten by a dog, get as much information about the dog and his owners as possible (including the dog's license number, if he has one). Then call the Department of Health's Veterinarian Public Health division at (212) 676-2483. They will double check that the dog's rabies vaccination is current. As well, under New York's "dangerous dog" law (Local Law 2 of 1991), if the dog's attack was unprovoked, the City may require the owners to muzzle or confine the dog, attend obedience class, carry liability insurance, or, in extreme cases, have the dog put down. "
"dog bites human" report form online here:
http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/vet/vetegp.shtml
call 311 with "dog bites dog" and they take a report for the Parks Dept, who has their own enforcement division. they give you a confirmation # to follow up what happened.
GET OWNER INFO if you are involved in an incident!
UPDATE: Parks actually called me back for more info.
Parks refers it to the local precinct if they are going to enforce something.
You can call the Brooklyn Parks Enforcement Patrol Office directly at 718 437-1351. Sgt. Johnson.
If you don't know the information on the owner of the dog who bit your dog, you probably don't want to call nyc animal control, because they might put *your* dog into quarantine! or so the vet said . . . -
So thanks for all the good info. I did end up calling the police to file a report. There's very lttle they can do. I had a long talk w/ the cops. Because it wasn't me the dog went after, and because the dogs were allowed off the leashes at that time it seems to fall into a black hole.
I will inform FIDO. The police suggested I call the ASPCA. They have their own police and if this guy is using his dogs as a weapon then they have more power to do something. Right now, all my complaint falls under is harrassment. -
Taken from the park website: "Dogs should not be off-leash during off-leash hours if they are not responsive to voice command. "
From what I saw, this guys dogs were in no way under control by voice command and just barely so by the leashes he was struggling to hold.
His dogs heard us coming and we heard some horrible yelping that we could only conclude was his dogs attacking each other in their frenzy. Luckily they were not loose when we saw them Tuesday. -

Maybe those dogs do need muzzles but and it sucks if you felt threatened but unless your dogs were on-leash also...he was right. Off leash dogs are never supposed to be in the vale, and the only place in the park that dogs are supposed to be in water is at the dog beach.

Dogs can also go in the lake from the Peninsula during off-leash hours.
-
He was saying dogs weren't allowed over there. I think he was hoping to go somewhere without dogs, but he really wasn't making any effort to exercise them. He was just sitting there on the phone. When several of us were there, we weren't right where he was so it's not like we invaded "his space".
I take my dog there, on leash, to cool off in the fountain which is so much cleaner and closer for me than the beach.
It sounds like the OP saw him with his dogs loose there.
From what I saw, though, I think as long as this guy goes to the park in the same manner (no muzzles, no discouraging the dogs) we are going to see something bad happen to a dog or possibly a person who tries to intervene. I worked two years at a county shelter and never saw a dog with this much obvious dog aggression. -

Yes...forgot about that...ty. -
Just remember, not all pit-bulls are monsters. We have the sweetest one in the world. That being said, I wouldn't want to cross paths with these two.
-
I think the main thing to take from this is to watch for these dogs, and file a report if anything happens.
OP, how badly was your dog hurt? -

Then you both deserve a ticket, him for letting his dogs of leash in the vail and you for letting your dogs swim in a fountain.

Problem solved.

Agreed.

thanks for asking. she's ok. he got her down and she fell in the water and then ran. he went after her and knocked her down again, she was yelping but when i finally got to her he had gotten off her. some nice bike rider got off his bike and actually stood between the two dogs. the owner of the pitbull called his dog back and it finally went. mine was a bit shakey and she coward for a while but i didn't see any blood. the other owner didn't even come over to see if she was ok. I am convinced he was doing a drug deal and didn't want to be identified. sorry, but there, I said it....

That really really sucks, I know how scary it is to have your dog attacked by a larger dog, I'm glad she is ok.
Based on what you described your best bet is the ASPCA. They probably won't do much, but if enough people complain about the dog and the owner they might investigate. But in all reality, until the dogs bites a person, probably nothing will be done.

true that. that's exactly what the cops said.... -
What is up with the pitbull craze? Every Tom, Dick, and Harry in town has got a pitbull now. Why are pitbulls the latest fashion accessory, like a hot new designer bag? Pitbulls everywhere. Christ almighty!
-
Animal slavery should be illegal alltogether, everyone with a pet is evil. Pomeranians and shih-tzus need to be placed back into the wild ASAP so they can take back their place as king of the beasts.

Pitbull "craze" as you call it, has been going on for quite some time. For a minute there, I remember a group tried to make it the State Dog, as they have been so prevelant, particularly the last decade.
However, I feel there's been a great deal of irresponsible breeding and if you go to a shelter, there are more of those than any other breed! Also, people think they want a tough dog, but the second the dog gets rough, real rough, and the owners realize they're simply not prepared to deal with a vicious animal they trained....well then, they get dumped. Sad, because they can be such wonderful dogs when brought up correctly. -

The great majority of them are rescues that have been adopted to keep them from being put down at a shelter. My dog was found wandering the streets; she likely got loose from backyard breeder. We tried to adopt her out, but the majority of the potential adopters were no longer interested when they were informed that we had had her neutered - what does that tell you?
Need any more evidence? How about this?
-
Can't believe there's a market for pit bulls when there are so many in the shelters. Scary. (As an aside, isn't 4 weeks a little young to be weaning puppies, not that I'd put money on the fact Rocky is a caring breeder....)
-
many of these puppies aren't being bred as pets

Good one is a judgmental, over reactive, racist.
There I said it.
:afro: :afro: :afro: :afro: :afro: :afro: -
Dear DR: since you seem to be living up to your name, how dare you make a comment like that? no where in my comments was there a mention about color/race/ or otherwise so how can you make a comment like that about me and then add those horrible faces with afros... insinuating something about yourself? Fool
-
Er, what is horrible about faces with afros?
-
oh stop twisting what I said. if DR is going to insinuate that I am racist why would he put smiley faces with afros...isn't he insinuating something...and that's ok? this is stupid. you are barking up the wrong tree and frankly have taken away from the original message. good day
