Undead Superdrive — Brooklynian

Undead Superdrive

I think my CD burner is dead, but I'm not quite sure. Does anyone have experience with Macintosh repair in PHeights or somewhere close? What about that place on Flatbush near Dean? What are the alternatives to TekServe?

Here is the message that is causing me grief:
The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03

I tried a couple blank disks, so suspect it's really my superdrive, and a quick check of the web suggests that I may be out of luck. I'm in the middle of burning 200 demo disks, so I'm pushing my machine more than the average user. I probably need to buy an external burner. Does anyone have experience with that?

I looked on the ProHo guide but didn't find anything, so I will return the fruits of my search to our forum/forums.

Thanks.

  • Not exactly in the area, but I have had pretty good luck with Digital Society, in Manhattan. It's on like 11th and Broadway or something, only a few blocks from the 14th St. Q train... They weren't the fastest in the world, but the people were very nice, helpful, and informative. Plus the prices seemed very reasonable.
  • My machine is fine. It's the medium that's the messer-upper.

Summary: The Sony CD-Rs I just bought from Staples are unreliable.

    The longer version:
After burning successfully about 20 Sony CD-Rs, the next four failed. I thought my burner was dead (and some web searches bolstered this opinion) then I tested HP and Imation CD-Rs, and they worked. Then I tried Sony again twice and they failed. Then I tried the Sony yet again from the middle of the spindle, and it worked.

    Result:
I just wasted some time with excessive blogging. Though Sony is certainly in the doghouse these days for several reasons.
  • Thanks for the follow-up. For the record, though, I only trust Tekserve with my computers.

Carnivore is mostly right. Tekserve has been the best for a long time but they are really busy and slw. for an alternative try TechKnowSphere. MY friend Andy runs it he's at 212-682-5346. They usually have time to fix stuff fast. they are Apple approved and right near Penn Station.

http://www.tkssol.com/ they also frequently answer the phone after hours.
  • i'll also vouch for tekserve. they're real mac pros. nice to hear though that there may be other good mac shops around.
