Pool to swim laps near park slope?
I found out that the BerklCarroll pool is closed for the month of august and I'm not getting any thinner..so I'm going to get a membership to the NYRecreation Center tomorrow and I found out u can use any of their swimming pools.
Instead of using asser levy or chelsea in manhattan, i was wondering if anyone had good experiences with the ones close to park slope (red hook pool or the douglas degraw pool?)/.
I'm a lap swimmer and I would prefer to swim between 6am and 7am or between 4pm to 7pm. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

.
Closed in August? What a great time for a pool in New York City to be closed!
The logic is what? -
The YMCA on 9th streeet is your best bet.
-
The Temple on the corner of 8th ave & Garfield pl also has a pool in the basement. But I’m not sure when or how you could get permission to use it.

You should check out the city pools in Sunset Park and Red Hook. SSP is 54 yards and RH is 43 yards. They have lap swim from 7-8:30a and 7-8:30p. There are also other hours available, though the masses are allowed in during those times.

Only temple members can use that pool-it is not open to the general public. -

You can get a pool membership, without having a temple membership, but I don't think it's open in the early AM. -

^^^^this
Except the Red Hook pool is HUGE. You can usually swim laps outside the part they have roped off for kids during the day. It's a pretty quick bike ride from here.
The city pool at DeGraw is much smaller, but they have laps swimming hours too.
It's next to impossible to swim laps there when all the kids are playing, although it's kinda fun to hang out (if you don't mind kids.) -

Really? You can get a pool only membership? I had asked about that once and they told me no-only temple members. Will have to check into that.
Just checked their website and this is what they say about non temple members and the gym and pool:
Gym and Pool Membership is also available to up to 50 non-Temple members at a cost of $300.00 for an individual and $400 for a family.
So, it is very limited for non temple people. -
I have a pool related question-
I am a horrible swimmer. I've been a horrible swimmer my whole life (I actually used t live on the ocean for about 10 years but I'm scared of ocean animals so never went in anyway.) I know swimming is great exercise and I think I'd enjoy it over running or something, but I'm so bad that I'm embarrassed to even flap around in the pool (seriously, im that bad. Doggy paddle only.)
Are there adult swimming classes? Am I going to be with a bunch of 90 year olds doing aqua jazzersize? I've seen some at the Y (which I joined yesterday) but I'm so intimidated that I'd love to hear someone's experience before I throw myself, flailing, in with a bunch of good swimmers. -
^^ Camp Olympia does adult swim lessons (my younger son learned to swim with them a few years ago with the kid lessons and he still goes once a week just to swim and play basketball), some friends of my hubby went.
They are not old, the friend and his wife are in their 30s-they just never learned how to swim. They said the lessons really worked for them. They give lessons at the pool in the old John Jay high school-here's the info on them:

Couple of things Carmen:
1. The best way to learn how to swim is, in fact, to "throw (yourself), flailing, in with a bunch of good swimmers.
2. You can't teach an old dog new tricks.
3. Those ocean "animals" are not animals... they are fish dammit. Except for whales which are imaginary. -
Couple more pool related things:
I have a temple pool membership. I doubt they ever reach that 50 non-member mark. I'm not a member of the temple though.
2. Jackrabbit Sports might have some swimming classes for all levels. I know SBR in Manhattan does. If you do those, you'll get trained really well, really quickly by professionals. Probably pay more but may be one-on-one too. -
Have you looked into the Y on 9th street?

I love swimming and love the ocean, but Carmen, I hear you.. those animals/fish/jimmy hoffas, especially when you can't see em, creep me out big time! -
On another related note-
I assume the Y pool has a schedule- is it located online anywhere? I got a class schedule but it's not really pool-related. If I get up the cajones to actually go in I want to make sure I'm not disrupting lap swim or baby's first aquarobics or something. -
The YMCA at 125 Court St. [Court & Atlantic ] has lap lanes. My neighbor takes his sons there and said it's a great pool

Seriously Carmen, check out the lessons at Camp Olympia-I believe they will be good for you-and, you can set them so there is no one else with you. Our friend and his wife got lessons alone when they went. -
i biked to red hook yesterday, and boy, they have big swimming pool. i'll definitely check it out sometime.
and the pool at ymca, do you have to be a member or something? -

It's not online, but you can walk in and ask for one and they won't hassle you. Changes seasonally, but there's always adult lap swim scheduled at least a few times a day (almost always first thing in the morning and late at night, in addition to some mid-morning and mid-afternoon times). Also I think they do offer adult swim classes.

My son (who is an adult) swims at the YMCA on 9th street and has for many years but this summer he has been going to the Red Hook pool and they do have hours open for lap swim. He is a "real" swimmer.. Brooklyn tech swim team in his youth and he tells me he is really enjoying the Red Hook experience and that includes the easy parking situation.
