TNT summer: saving grace, closer, burn notice, et al. — Brooklynian

TNT summer: saving grace, closer, burn notice, et al.

does anyone watch this show? I wanted to like it:

alcoholic, promiscuous, PTSD victim after oklahoma city bombing, female police officer. great set up. then ... god gets involved. I can't seem to get super into it. I love the closer - and brenda lee is far less accessible to me as a character than grace (who I share too many characteristics with and wish I could be as skinny as) - so why can't I get into saving grace??

Comments

  • Never heard of it. :-k
  • it's on TNT I think.
  • With you on Saving Grace. I love the character, hate the god part. If she ever does get saved, there will be no show. I watch for the drunken sluttiness, which is so so so entertaining. However, as I was saying to someone today, I think Earl might be going away. Maybe. He's the part of the show all the reviewers disliked, and in the more recent ads for the show, there's no sign of him. My friend pointed out that the first season of Sex in the City featured Carrie speaking directly into the camera, which was also a feature of the show that got panned by reviewers. Second season, this stopped. So maybe there is hope? Maybe Earl tells her that booze and sex are a righteous path to nirvana, and makes his exit?
Very excited to find out and to see more of Brenda Lee.
  • Just for clarification, I'm not anti-god or irreligious. But what they portray as faith borders on idolatry.
  • yay, thanks! do you like the closer?
  • I love, love, love the Closer. In Plain Sight and Burn Notice are growing on me too. Mostly, I'm very excited about these character driven, woman centered dramas. Love that they are all smart, and like in real life, often get trouble for it and don't mix so well with stupid/threatened men. I like Brenda Lee in particular because she manages to be so seemingly sweet and innocuous when she's really tough as nails. The only thing that bugs me about her is the emphasis they place on her secret, shameful habit of eating lots of sweet junk food. First of all, who would care if they could eat all that crap and stay that skinny, and even if not so skinny, would anyone really care about a desk drawer full of ho-ho's? It's such an obvious attempt to replace the old smokes/bottle of booze in the desk drawer convention, but it just doesn't work. Plus, does she have to be so thin and so addicted to sugar? That's an impossible fantasy for most of us. Still, love her and the show.
  • I hear you on the sugar thing in the closer. she's skinny skinny skinny, but ...

I will say I know a lot of (ugh, walking into sterotype land) white women between 5 and 95 who have major body issues even though their bodies are totally normal ... or even skinny. and they also have massive sugar addictions so while I can't relate (if I had her job, I would definitely have a bottle of booze in the drawer. heck, I had a bottle of wine in my drawer at work - now it's sitting on a shelf in my house - didn't drink 'on the job' unless it was work sanctioned but often looked at that bottle and thought "hrmm") to the sugar thing, I can totally relate to the need for an 'assist' in a tough moment. (hence why I think I should LOVE grace)

I LOVE burn notice. spy stories are fucking awesome. I grew up watching james bond and reading john le'carre. while I hate the bourne books (god they suck) I love the movies. so. I love spy stories and burn notice plus miami is awesome. and both the ex-gf and mom are so fucking amazing I can barely stand it.
  • Yeah, I get a kick out of Fiona and the mom. I recorded the season debut, but half way through I got too tired to finish it. I liked that he seemed more human/vulnerable, at least it seemed that way to me in the first half, as I watched groggily. I'll give it another go tonight. With you on the spy stories--too much fun. And Sam? I love Sam.
Are you liking "In Plain Sight?"
I like that Brenda Lee has a vice, but I too would relate more to a bottle of wine in the drawer.
Yeah, body issues do seem all-pervasive in our culture for almost every woman. Sad. That's one reason I was drawn to the Medium; Patricia Arquette actually looks like a real soccer mom. She's beautiful and not skinny. That show gets on my nerves from time to time, but I do like that she's not overly skinny and never on a diet.
When does Saving Grace actually begin again? So curious to see where the writers are headed....
  • I think grace starts up this week or next. I taped the first ep of burn notice's new season but I'm also hoping I got the last one from last season. can't remember the conclusions (well, sorta do but want to know what happened again)

sam is ... well ... me. or at least, the me I wish I could be if hot guys and gals went for fat, alcohol-focused folks who are damn good at their jobs but also looking for a party. (I hate that men win this, hands down - beh!) oh, and I'm not a spy/friend-of-spy/working-for-the-fbi.

I hated the first few eps of in plain sight and stopped taping it. have been taping the more recent eps just to see if I kinda like it better. she seems to be too "together" with all of her issues, kinda like grace, to be believable. I guess that's the thing I like about brenda lee only having kinda one wholly non-destructive issue. it makes sense that she can have all that stuff going on without fucking half her town/having the most dysfunctional family evar/being a crazed alcoholic, ya know? (clearly this is why, still, I want to like grace. she's late to work, she's fucked up half the time, she's screwed half the town, etc. I can relate)
  • I know what you mean about In Plain Sight. Something about the writing seemed way too cute the first few episodes. And does every conversation with her partner have to be a bandying about of witticisms and clever put-downs? But. The last episode was a little better; Mary is revealed to clearly not be in control of her issues...won't spoil it. I believe it's still repeating this week. Anyway, I found myself liking her and the show a little better. What I wanna know, though, is when is the other shoe going to drop with the sister? Remember her stuffing bags of coke into the trunk in her bedroom? Feels like the big suspense bomb they'll drop a little too late at the end of the season.
Good for you, being like Sam. Those are my favorite kind of people. By that I mean the kind that sort of go too hard and too hard in many directions. I can relate. I have spent my life swinging between polar opposites, from barfly (and worker) to incredibly fastidious student. Not a lot in between. And by the way, who needs the hot people? I mean, if they're not smart enough to know greatness when they see it. Spy friends would be cool, though.
I do like Grace, and can't wait to see more of her. I have thoughts on this, but have to go, go, go, and study, study, study!
Oh, and do some research on Tequila for a job I'm hoping to get.
    Cheers!
  • Watched the new Grace last night. Did you catch it?
  • Okay, Alafair, since you're bored witless... Hope you're not anymore, but just in case, here are some thoughts on this dropped topic. Hope no one else is annoyed at its revival.
Loved the business about her hunting down and turning in the pedophile priest. What I'm confused about is what exactly is the show's premise? What is a "last chance angel" and why has one been sent to Grace? She says that Earl is both her and the priest's last chance angel. Are their lives meant to be seen as parallel in terms of their degree of moral corruptness and sin? I just don't get it. Grace can be reckless and has made some bad mistakes, but she's in no way on the level of someone who has spent his life molesting and raping children. What last chance are they supposed to get and how exactly?
As much as that stuff confuses and perplexes me, I find Grace's character so engaging.
Loved the most recent episode of the Closer, BTW. The detectives all seem to be developing more distinct and interesting personalities. Especially love Lieutenant Tao and his quirkiness. As in "Walk with me! Walk with me!"
  • I haven't caught up with either of these so no worries (but I'm not anti-spoilers so now I'm kinda excited about watching them!)

the whole last-chance angel thing is based on the pilot, right? cause I didn't see the pilot of Grace but doesn't she kill someone and he brings him back to life or something right? I'm not sure how a last-chance angel can fix the lives ruined by a pedophile priest, either, in that case. and heck, she still drives around too fast wildly drunk. so like ... last-chance to kill someone else? so confusing.

I've been watching ncis marathons and house and bones and stuff instead of these shows I actually want to concentrate on because I kinda want to give them some attention. perhaps I'll watch them today. I'm so glad it's wednesday, not thursday! I was so confused this morning. unemployment does funny things to my brain.
  • Girl, get on it! The first two Closer episodes are stellar. Leaving it there for the time being.
Yeah, right, last chance to kill someone is about right. Right? I dunno, but if an angel appeared to me and gave back the life I'd taken from someone while driving drunk, I don't think I'd ever chance that kind of shit again. And yet, she does, without seeming horribly demonic. Is that the point? That habits die hard and change is hard and introspection is, well, rare and difficult? I guess I should appreciate the fact that this show didn't turn into some kind of redemption/revival craziness. Wouldn't expect Holly Hunter to become involved in such a thing, but given the last eight years of relentless right-wing religious stuff, it mighta happened.
Can't wait to hear from you after you've seen the eps. BTW, you can watch the pilot online at TNT's website.
Have to add Bones and the others into my recorded rotation. Running out of things to watch and only really have time (or would that be patience?) to watch recorded television anymore.
    Have a great weekend.
  • bones rules. and I'm watching the first new ep of closer now. it's fucking rockin' it. jesus christ.
  • srsly! "hello, just plain brenda."

    best line evar.
  • do you watch burn notice? I'm loving the new season.

and I saw the new ep of grace. not bad.
  • I know, that just plain Brenda guy is bound to be back. I hear he's actually an Irish actor. Who knew?
Loving Burn Notice, especially the business with his mom. Poor mom.
Completely enthralled with Grace. Holly Hunter is just so damned engaging. Her best friend also rocks, although the way the dudes fawn over her gets to be a little much sometimes.
Are there any decent dramas anymore on network television? About the only thing I watch there is Law and Order or an occasional CSI.
I was finna respond to something else, but I think I forgot what it was...
  • What is the premise of Bones?
  • bones is based on the books and life of kathy reichs (sp) - the forensic anthropologist. basically last season was a little fucking unreal and crazy and I can't watch episodes from it now that I've seen the finale. but, the premise is that a forensic anthropologist (woman) is teamed up with an fbi agent (angel from buffy). she's absurdly literal and borderline asbergers. so is half of her team. the fbi agent is totally off the wall "gut" dude. so of course, there's chafing.

the other network shows I like, aside from those you mentioned, are house (the vicodin addicted genius asshole doctor) and ncis (cause I have a crush on pauley parrette.)

and damn, just saw the second ep of grace (I think) where the guy she's screwing/partnered with is buck ass naked on her floor. holy shit. what an ass on that one - so pretteh.
  • and just caught up with burn notice. I LOVE that show. sam as a pretend lawyer/investor guy? hiLARIOUS!
  • Sam as anything is kind of awesome. That's what he does: he's a karma, karma, karma chameleon. Or however that's spelled. Gettin off the compuster to watch.
  • can't wait to hear your review. totally badass. I'm loving all of this stuff. the whole unemployment thing means I've caught up with most shows and am now adding in movies. I clearly need to cancel cable and get netflix instead of playing this crazy monthly bill so I can see all these shows. wait. just kidding.
  • I'm just glad I'm able to record it all. I watched Burn Notice and remember loving it, but I gotta do it again! Just hoping someone else will jump in here. Can we change the thread title to "TNT Summer Dramas"?
Oh, wait, and the there's Mad Men. You seent it? I got that on my DVR from last season--I think. So, so, so, good. Although it wouldn't fall under the TNT category, but still.
  • done! and I also like the first 48 but only watch it when I'm bored - it's too repetitive to tape, for me at least. but yeah. :)
  • First 48 is a fave of my husband. I sort of feel icky when I watch it and just want it to be over already. As in, I want some writers from Law and Order to come put the story into shape. Again, it just makes me sad to see people go down. so often when I watch 48 I think, jeez, that would be me if I weren't smarter or from parents who could actually afford me an education. Then again, my dad's favorite maxim was "There, but for the grace of God, go I."
See, when the writers step in, there's always a chance for some kind of redemption. I know it's manufactured, but still...I'm a sucker for it.
