Where to buy a christmas tree?
Where's a good local spot to buy a christmas tree? I seem to recall that last year they had them at the plant store near Atlantic terminal... is there any place closer to Washington Ave that sells them? Also, what's "reasonable" to pay for a 4-5 foot tree in Brooklyn? This is my first time buying a tree since I moved to the city.
Thank you!
Thank you!

Try the farmer's market in Grand Army Plaza on Saturday - fair prices and fresh trees

I think the prices around here all are crazy, but "Welcome to New York." There's a guy on Vanderbilt who sells nice small ones. There's also the place by Atlantic Center, where Meggle bought her tree the past two years. I prefer both places to the GAP farmers' market, which seems to be pricey.
Favorite part about having a tree in Brooklyn: throwing it out the front window into the trash area when done. Look out below!

Subject: Oh Tannenbaum
There's a lot on the east corner of 5th Avenue and Flatbush Avenue (or is it Pacific St & Flatbush) run by some nice (are there any other kind) Canadian folks. They've been at that location for years. It's under the remnants of an old yellow Hot Bird sign. -

correct, where fith, pacific and flatbush converge. i guess they are now leasing that space from ratner. but i walked by and they are all set up ready to sell you your tree. -
I think they were selling some nice trees in front of Met Food on Vanderbilt and the small Key Food on Flatbush. I usually get mine on the corner there by Pacific/5th/Flatbush also. Their prices are okay but what I like is the give my son a small tree (usually the trimmed part of a much larger tree) for free for his room.

Got a tree in front of Natural Land on Flatbush one year, at the place that everyone is talkin' about (Flatbush & 5th) last year and we went to Lowe's this year- we had a rental car with time to spare... why not?! The ones at Lowe's were pretty reasonable, depending on type/height. We got a Douglas Fir, about 6'6" tall for 30-some-odd bucks...

Subject: $10 a foot
I've found $10 a foot to be a city norm. I like the folks that set up next to the Food Coop on Union every year (I believe they come down from Connecticut). They have no association to the Food Coop, they just happen to be nearby. They are very nice, never rushed and very pleased to explain the differences in trees, their freshness, etc.
Last year I tried the guys from the tree farm in the Finger Lakes that set up in the Farmers Market at GAP. They wanted the standard $10 a foot but when I questioned the top 1 1/2 feet of bare branch being included in the cost, the guy got very un-holiday-ish. I think he was looking to dupe the city guy with the whole "farm country as porn" scene that the Farmers Market devolves into at times. When I called him on his bullshit (I too am from the Finger Lakes and my grandfather once ran a tree farm), he got even more huffy. These folks were already selling trees this past weekend -- avoid them at all costs. -

I got my tree at Flatbush and 5th/Dean, and it was significantly cheaper than the trees closer to GAP. I got a really nice tree that's definitely over 7 feet for $40. It's a bit of a schlepp, but it's totally worth it. Plus, the Canadian guys are super-nice. -
Try in front of the church on 7th avenue between Carroll andf President. If I recall they have nice trees and decent prices.

Garlands, garlands, we need garlands, does anyone know of a vendor selling garlands or do we have to get out the wire and snippers and do it ourselves? Where are all those annoying little elves when you need them?

Subject: best xmas tree
This year, we got the best tree we've ever gotten in NYC -- we bought it from the Forest Floor (659 Vanderbilt Ave) - it looks great!
No more scraggly-charlie-brown trees for us! Plus they are super-friendly at the Forest Floor, and they have lots of beautiful Xmas ornaments.
In years past, we have bought our trees from the farmers' market or from various stores & vendors selling on the street -- and we've never been really happy with the results. -
Well, we bought two 30 foot garlands at Home Depot on Saturday and hung them from the picture rail in our apartment. Our living room now looks like a bavarian hunting lodge - does anyone have a deer head that we can borrow for the holidays?

I (heart) the Vermonters in front of the Coop.
They have some of the lovely soft long-needle trees and Kevin, they are your garland elves -
Aaargh, I'm soooo over garland, see above
