To the construction workers on Bergen...

omg... I didn't hear them. Is it the construction across the street? Isn't that illegal aren't they supposed to start after 7am?
I know around 7:30am i normally hear loud pounding like Godzilla is coming or something....
ahhh honey sorry!! -
You can call 311 and report them. I believe the noise ordinance (which includes construction work) is in effect until 7 or 8 am. Either way, 6:10am, is not cool.

Yup it was that one. Maybe you didn't hear it all 'cause you're on the back side of our building and I'm on the front?

Anyway, they just moved a bunch of equipment out and made a huge racket for 10 or 15 minutes and then took off -- long enough to wake me up and keep me from going back to sleep, but not long enough for any sort of 311 response to get there in time to bust them. -
Probably not a bad idea to report it anyway, to make sure the complaint is on record (to add further weight to any prior or subsequent complaints).
Something tells me this may not be the only time they try it. -
Unfortunately 311 jettisons the complaint numbers once they've been followed up on (at least with noise complaints). If a cop car drives by a day later, and sees or hears no noise it is closed. However it pays to leave your name and address because they will send you a letter requesting more information on the source. I guess this would work better with a chronic problem. Your only hope with this would be to get multiple complaints at the same time. Try setting up an IM alert or cell phone alarm to several people in the building.

Very interesting. Good to know, thanks.

addendum: you'll get a letter/questionare if they have multiple complaints from you but it won't indicate the source of the problem. You have to fill it in. When I got the letter the original bar had been closed by the FDNY, but a new one had opened next door. I filled in the new problem and they had a noise violation written within a week. Just like a jump/start!

I see where you're trying to go with that, but it would be really assy of me if I ended up waking up neighbors in my building in my attempt to get them to complain about the noise that woke me up.

What did Ben Franklin say? We better all hang together or surely we'll hang seperately". Among many jobs that I have is managing small loft buildings for "enlightened" Landlords. They want to be "friends" with their tenants. This actually works to the LL's benefit in residential buildings, in commercial the opposite is generally true. When there is no common enemy tenants rarely talk to each other and they suffer in silence with no desire to organize because there must be some legit reason the heat is off for a few days, the LL being such a nice guy. Sorry, I'm way off point.
I had a heat problem in my place in Dumbo and really didn't want to be beholding to anybody in my building so I had my father call 311 (upstate NY), a few friends in the neighborhood, my wife called from her cell, everybody calls from a cell of course. Is it honest? I don't really care, the heat was fixed in less than a week. I bet you could round up a dozen people on this blog who would take a wake up call tomorrow morning. Just give 311 a name and of course your address. Numbers talk! -
Sorry another addendum: My landlord in Dumbo is a nice guy
