Bedford and Bergen — Brooklynian

Bedford and Bergen

Hey!

I have a deposit on an apartment on Bedford between Bergen and St. Marks. I was just wondering if anyone from the neighborhood can tell me if they enjoy living in that area. Are there any places close by to buy coffee, some breakfast, grocery stores, bars, etc? Is it a safe neighborhood? Anything I should be weary of before I sign the lease and move there?

  • It is too close to the Armory for my taste, but on Franklin and Bergen, I think, it Sushi Tatsu: the ultimate sign of gentrification! They just opened a store in PLG also.

Down south on Franklin at St Johns is a beer garden, there is Bush Baby between Bedford and Franklin on Fulton - though the brunch is mediocre. You can take the Bergen/Dean bus, bike, or walk to Prospect Heights where you will find just about everything you want.

I would walk around by the Armory and see how you feel. Maybe at night and with a friend.
  • There's all kinds of stuff on and just off Franklin that should make your move comfortable. There's Homage on Park Pl, just on the other side of Franklin for burgers, Chevella's and Abigail on classon for food, Franklin Park on St. Johns and Franklin for beer. Sushi Tatsu is on Dean and Franklin and if you look for a thread titled "Franklin Represent!" you'll find a lot about the Indian place on Franklin, which I love. Move in! Explore and enjoy! Use the search engine provided on this site and you'll get an idea...
  • My ultimate hands down fave restaurant in the nabe is Tavern on Dean on Dean & Underhill. The fried chicken is to die for! Celebrated my birthday there 2 years in a row and I don't even live there anymore!
  • MOD NOTE: Hey guys we have two threads going at the same time about this intersection. You may want to take a look at the other one.

  • what is the armory and where is it? is that a bad area? the only thing i didnt like when walking around there the other day was atlantic ave northward. it seemed dirty/loud. bedford and bergen seemed quiet though with a couple of churches and a day care center there. the streets around it had trees/brownstones and seemed quiet as well.
  • The armory is the large castlelike building on the corner of Atlantic and Bedford. It houses a homeless shelter for men. It's not a "bad" area so much as it is a bunch of homeless guys right next to a number of pretty quiet blocks.

Here is a thread about the armory and plans to expand the shelter.

  • While I recognize it is classist to discourage folks from moving over there (specifically if you are unfamiliar and have no idea what is going on!) I also had a friend who lived a half block from the Armory and again his car was broken into and his building etc. When you are experiencing extreme poverty and have few or no options, understandably these sorts of things take place. I can not verify that it was a resident of the Armory who did these things, but I do know I lived a few blocks west and south and I have friends south on Franklin and at New York both north and south and they've never experienced either.

It is kind of loud also. I guess cops are around too so that might make you feel safer?
