I'll obey the law when cops stop running red lights.

Since once again you're being so high and mighty about this, I'd be willing to bet (if there were any way to verify it) that your average cop breaks more laws per day than your average civilian. -
What a strange bet...

I am _so_ not taking that bet!
What is the rule with cops and cell phones anyway? Some people have told me that they are not supposed to use them while working, but I can't imagine this to be the case. I've seen _many_ a cop with them glued to their ears whilst cruising about. Just wondering. -
There are exemptions for using cell phones in Emergency situations that apply to Police and civilians. The NYPD's policy does not allow its members to carry nor use cellphones on duty. The reality is that Officers use there phones all day in the performance of their duty; Used to call the radio dispatcher, call the Pct for 311 assignments, run warrants, run licenses, get private information that isn't read out over Police radio's IE:anonymous complainants. talking to other Officers in the field, notifying DOT for defective traffic signals to name just a few. Asking someone to obey the law isn't being "high and mighty" . I didn't say that Cops don't break Laws and if thats your justification for breaking Laws thats a pretty weak argument. Yes Police may go through Red lights too, that doesn't mean you can!

The grand irony of all this entire situation is that I'm not even a drinker. I just like to fantasize. -

So you believe that the police are above the law?
It is precisely when those who are supposed to enforce the law instead flout the law that citizens lose respect for the rule of law.
Misbehavior by cops hastens the unraveling of civilization. Cops who ignore the law have no right to enforce it against others. They should all be stripped of their guns, badges, and especially their pensions.
Even for using their cellphones while driving! -
There goes the 78th Pct.

Traffic Control Signs and Signals -
The law requires that all drivers obey traffic control signs and signals. The only exceptions are:
If a traffic or police officer is directing traffic, or
Emergency vehicles may proceed through traffic control devices, but are required to use caution. §1110 -
3. Subdivision two of this section shall not apply to (a) the use of a mobile telephone for the sole purpose of communicating with any of the following regarding an emergency situation: an emergency response operator; a hospital, physician's office or health clinic; an ambulance company or corps; a fire department, district or company; or a police department, (b) any of the following persons while in the performance of their official duties: a police officer or peace officer; a member of a fire department, district or company; or the operator of an authorized emergency vehicle as defined in section one hundred one of this chapter, or (c) the use of a hands-free mobile telephone.

What about when they're just standing around? Are they allowed to chat on their cell then? Outside my subway stop, I've seen many a cop on the phone, and you can just tell it's a personal call.
-
How bout next time you see a Cop on the phone, interrupt him/her and ask them if it's a personal call.
-
What do you think the response will be if he/she is making a personal call.
-
just out of curiousity, how many of you make unauthorized phone calls or browse the Internet when it's against company policy?
-
Are you equating the responsibilities of clerical workers with that of Police Officers.

If I was a police officer and a UFO crash landed in a yard, I would put police barriers around so no one could see in, then I would proceed to force the aliens to have sex with me, both male and female, then I'd steal their space money and then pee all over their spaceship. All I am saying is that power corrupts people, It doesn't have to be me, everyone would do the same in that position.
-
It seems you meet all the qualifications to join the Force

Hey- no need to get snippy with me, k, Copper?
You just gave a whole list of circumstances (all legit) as to why an officer needs to use his cell (I'm thinking you're getting ripped off by using your own minutes for work related calls...but that's another issue.)
But, you just side-step the personal call thing- which I don't even particularly have a problem with. I mean, shit, if I'm working the corner (as an OFFICER! Head. Out. Gutter.) I'd probably be bored as hell and would probably be on the phone as well.
You don't have to justify it, you just have to own up to it. -
I'm not snippy, the fact is that cell phones are not authorized to be carried by NYPD Police Officers regardless of whether or not it's in the performance of duty. So it really doesn't matter if its a personal call or not.
-
I hear the space dollar to US is really crappy right now.

I'm sorry, i didn't mean to single out police officers. I'm sure anyone that had an alien trapped in their room that no one new about, would try to have sex with it , and to be clear, I'm talking about outer space aliens, not illegal aliens, because that would be REALLY messed up, especially if they didn't know english. Its way up there in the wrong category like finding an unsuspecting couple and selling them a puppy with down syndrome, possibly even more so.

i just really want to see 8 pages.

I'm with WCW on this one. I don't really care about the whole cops/cellphone thing as far are justification, but yah, it happens. Shrug. I'm sure some of it is valid, and some isn't. Such is life. As long as they aren't ignoring crime in order to chat with their honeys for hours on end, I'm not complaining.

I drink at the park all the time. I also drink on the subway if it's a weekend night and I'm on a long trip to meet friends elsewhere. Juice bottles (like Vitamin Water) are your friend.

Carnivore wrote: [quote=King without a crown]Agreed that arresting and entire trainload of passengers doesn't make much sense, but the ruling deals with 2 individuals in a car in which the Officer smells marihuana. Are we up to page #7 so someone can lock this thread?
Given how NYPD has responded to Critical Mass, for example, I don't think it's unreasonable to be concerned about unjustified mass arrests.
Article in today's Times about this. -

Been doing this ever since I got my first open container in '94 on third avenue and 13th street.
At the time I was like, "they give these tickets in this city?"
Little did I know it was a prelude to a lot of disappointing changes. -
Amazing footage of NYPD violating New Yorkers' rights and abusing their authority:
