Yeah, I'm gonna go spend $1,500. on a handbag, and then $900. on a dress. Then I'm gonna put it in my "I AM NOT A PLASTIC BAG" canvas bag and go to the PSFC!! Not.
Who buys this crap anyway? I am amazed how cheap people are, complaining about $5.00 here or there. Do these same people shop at Bird? Or here?..... -
Oh la la... a "true boutique" offers "Oscar de la Renta Print Dress" for only $650.
Sorry, ladies, but that overpriced rag cannot compete with the skin-tight dress American Apparel sells for $30.
This new business might be less better than another bank.
:pukel: -
Pffft. Suckers. I buy that shit on ebay for like $20. Then I go sell it to East Village consignment boutiques and make $75.

And then they open a store here, and sell it to some unsuspecting label sl_t for another $550 on top of that.
Heh, circle complete. -

Yup, you know the drill. "True Boutique" owner buys item for $15 at Salvation Army and sells it at "True Boutique" to birdbrain for $400. -
from what i've gathered, this looks like the kind of place where costume designers and the like will shop. it mentions that patricia field (costume designer for sex and the city and ugly betty) bought some stuff for the show.
if you go to the frock website, there is a ticker on the bottom of celebrities that have worn frock items.
i understand someone thinking the stuff is expensive (i thought so too) but these are high end designer items. if that's not your thing, it's not your thing, but i don't agree that these are salvation army finds.
i am primarily a vintage and thrift store shopper, and it would be an extremely rare occassion to find items of this caliber in a salvation army or even one of the nicer nyc vintage shops.
some people would find spending 3 million dollars on a brownstone or $6 on organic eggs absurd, so i don't think it's really fair to call someone a sucker for wanting to spend 500 bucks on a beautiful dress.
i sent an email to a bunch of my girlfriends with the info on the new store, and their reaction was universal...gorgeous stuff and they want to check it out.
guess i posted the news to the wrong crowd. -
Not sure I understand all the hate about this store. I don't plan on shopping there but its certainly a fun place for many people to shop. Its a lot more interesting of an add to the area than a cell phone store or bank.

Agree with the 2 preceding posts. My wife works in fashion as a designer and has been collecting vintage pieces (clothing, bags, accessories) for many years now, both for personal and as inspiration. We went in there last weekend and she was impressed with the selection; well-edited, great condition. She did find it on the expensive side. But as was pointed out above, this is not stuff you would find in a Salvation Army. If you did, you'd either be extremely lucky, or it would not be in the condition you find it here. Also, you'd have to do some digging and searching. That's what a store like this offers to shoppers interested in this kind of thing; an edited collection.
Yes, of course there are "boutique" stores that find things on ebay and in SA's, then mark them up 600%. But this doesn't appear to be one of those places.
If it's not your thing, hey, it's not your thing and that's cool. But to hate on it just because you personally find it too expensive and not what you would deem a reasonable purchase is kind of a bummer. We all have different thresholds. This store is trying to bring something to PS that doesn't currently exist, in this form anyway, so why hate on them for doing so? Not trying to flame...I was just very surprised to at the vitriol. I mean, sheesh...birdbrain, label slut, and suckers, all in a 1-page post? You guys/gals pull no punches. -
I guess it does come across altogether differently, if vitriol is sensed rather than humor.
No ill-will intended on my part, no offense intended, just poking fun.
But yeah, text being as it is, I can see how a person might read that in there. -
seems that despite the hatred (by some) on this board, they might be doing ok...
i like the story of keeping the family tradition alive on 5th avenue also.

to clarify, my postings aren't really about the store per se.
shopping is not something i do for "fun." i disagree with the label whores out there and have never practiced that sort of conspicuous consumption as a pastime or a "collector." (code word for rich and bored.)
personally, i don't care who the designer is, unless they are designing for me, like Mashood in Ft. Greene. .
i am surprised that this is the same crowd that complains about how brooklyn has lost its character because the influx of new money and new condos. you cannot buy character. Some celebutard wore this dress for a minute? wow.
put that in your $1,500.00 handbag and stuff it.
Flame on. -

Because its not Trader Joes or a good movie theater or karaoke bar or good Indian restaurant or a dry cleaner open on Sundays or a hardware store open after 6pm or a jazz club with live music every night....but I am thrilled it is not a bank! -

Wow, lots of anger against people who like to shop! But, I am guess I am just sensitive to this because I used to work in the fashion industry and am still very interested in it (and, I do own some designer bags-oh the horror!).

but, I am FAR from rich or bored! -
the only thing that pisses me off more are those stores that sell shit from the future.
Howdy, Stranger!
