Hispanic chow in Crown Heights — Brooklynian

Hispanic chow in Crown Heights

I believe they serve mostly Dominican cuisine.

I know, their name seems more appropriate for a laundromat than for a restaurant, which has made me waver about visiting it.
But as a lover of Caribbean food in general, I am still intrigued by what seems to be the only Spanish Caribbean restaurant in my neighborhood. Anybody enjoyed their food?

  • Its not the only one. Kelso, on Franklin is THE Panamanian restaurant in the neighborhood. I've gone in there a couple of times to say hello to folks I know and it is always packed.

Never even seen La Higienica where is it?
  • There's a Spanish Restaurant on Nostrand somewhere around Park Place as well as one around Montgomery.
  • Yum, Panamanian! How is it?
La Higienica is on Franklin and Sterling Pl.

drkman, the places that you mention, are they Spanish as in cuisine from Spain, tapas, paella and the like? What food do they serve?
  • we ordered from there once about 3 years ago.

it was enh. not the worst meal i've ever had, but not something i'm in a rush to have again. very oily.

but this was only once, and quite a while ago.

No, they are not Spanish as in cuisine. They are Carribean spanish restaurants. I think the one on Montgomery is Dominican and the one around Park Place is probably Puerto Rican. The serve the basic stuff like Pernil, Chicken, Pork Chops, Rice and Beans etc. I wouldn't say they are the best I've tasted but since they are the only ones that I know of in the neighborhood, I go to them when I want that style of cooking and I don't want to attempt it at home.
  • panamanian? I want arepas. who didn't tell me about this? you die!
  • Sorry, Kelso is just such a fixture (its always jammed packed with Panamanian families) I assumed everyone knew about it. Its on Franklin further north (maybe around Bergen or Dean).

I can't give a personal recommendation, but one of my best friends who is Panamanian swears by it. Her grandparents live on my block and she said that they were regulars there until they became to old to walk up there for lunch on their own.
  • okay fine, no death. but damn. I wanna go right now! except I have one of my meatless corndogs in the oven (I hate you, attempts at health/cheapness).

Hey, Homeowner, is't the place on Park Place and Nostrand, formerly Sabor Latina, owned by Dominicans? It does tons of business but definitely nothing fancy.
  • I will never eat at Kelso again. I know, I know, this is going to be one of those "their food made me sick" posts. Believe it if you want. I used to get their rice and peas all the time, they were delicious! The last time I went in there you could smell the bathroom from the counter. Of course, I was really hungry, I had no food at home and I'd eaten there before without any problems. Holy crap (no pun intended), did I regret that! And I'm quite sure it was that food that made me sick, I hadn't eaten anything else for hours and my stomach was perfectly fine the whole day. So don't be a dumbass like me, if a restaurant smells like a sewer, don't eat there!

Yes, I believe the former Sabor Latina (aka El Sabo La) is Dominican owned and operated.
  • Went to Kelso's last week and will be coming back for more.
Their stewed chicken was very tasty and tender, the patacones -fried green plantains- were nicely friend, crisp and not too greasy. The chicheme, a hominy corn pudding, is served hot and is very sweet, but i still found it yummy.
Now, I wonder about that Panamian Kool Aid...
