    Hi David,
This is a Predatory Water Bug and it has many of the same common names as the more commonly photographed genus Lethocerus, including Giant Water Bug, Electric Light Bug and Toe-Biter. This is however a different genus, Belostoma. Males of this genus carry the eggs which the female cements onto his back.
  • i am going to hurl.
  • which the female cements onto his back

    "Hold still, honey..."
  • Here's a toad that carries the eggs not on her back but INSIDE her back...

During mating the male sweeps the eggs onto the female's back, they adhere to her and become embedded in the skin. In some species tadpoles hatch from the skin after about 4 weeks, but in the Surinam toad they develop directly into toadlets, emerging from the mother's back after 3-4 months.
  • Almost totally off topic, but I snapped this critter yesterday in the BBG, and I just wanted to share. Dragonfly and poppy. Click for full-size.
