Good handheld bike pump and a place to buy it? — Brooklynian

Good handheld bike pump and a place to buy it?

Looking for a hand held bike pump. Hubby suggested we buy a Zefal-I called Dixon's and they don't carry that brand, They do have a Gyro and some other brand I can't remember now.

I haven't checked with R&A because the few times I have dealt with them, their attitude sucked. Is that bike shop on 7th Avenue in the teens still around? Or, are the pumps Dixon's sells good ones?

  • On the Move?
    Yeah, it's on the west side of 7th, between 12th & 13th.

I've heard good things about the place, but there's also mixed reviews about bike-snobbery on yelp. I've been there twice and had decent service. Nothing extraordinary -- and I can sense a bit of snobbery -- but nothing was said or acted to make me feel at all uncomfortable.

Don't know about their pumps, specifically.
  • the pump I use is a RavX which has worked great and its a cheap price. I don't live in the slope so the bike shop I use is Sheepshead Bay Cycles on Coney Island Ave and Ave Z.
  • Sheepshead Bay Cycles (also called "Roy's) is a great shop. No negative attitudes at all.
  • Topeak makes a ton of different pumps, many of them highly regarded. I have their Master Blaster pump, and am very happy with it. They have smaller portable ones as well.

    Here's the reviews:

I'm not sure who would have them, but they're pretty common, so you may want to call On the Move and Dixons.
  • I'm also a huge fan of Roy's on CI Ave.

I stopped in there just to borrow a wrench to fix a flat on my way down to the beach and they were very cool. No snobbery, no attitudes. Just regular folks.

On the Move is ok. I go there for little things.
  • I agree that the Topeak pumps are the best, me and my 4 kids all have them, however there's a prostitute on Front Street in Dumbo who I believe has the reputation of being able to blow up bicycle tires. Apparently she is also able to suck the paint off a barn.
  • A good pump is the maxisize enlargement system, I think you can pick it up at pink pussy cat boutique or possibly babeland.
