Roof work, possible cell tower? — Brooklynian

Roof work, possible cell tower?

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
Theres a bunch of working going on at the building that hosts the Utopia Bar (closed - up for rent...NOOOOO) on washington ave & Park pl. Looks like it could be a cell phone tower (going by the company name on their truck - "cell-something."

I hope its not a hideous, enormous tower. gross. anyone have any specifics?

  • Yes, they are installing a cell phone tower according the the permit they pulled a couple of months ago:

    Job Description:
OT 25,000 INSTALLING TELECOMMUNICATIONSCABINETS,RELATED ANTENNAS & RELA TED DUNNAGE ON ROF IN CONFORMANCE WITHTPPN # 5/98,NO CHANGE IS USE EGRES OR OC C

They also pulled a permit to install an HVAC system on the roof

Edited b/c your URL was breaking the page.
  • I'm fairly certain this is the Utopia space listed for rent on Craigslist.

The rent seems a tad bit high but the space is big and considering that everything is in place it could be easy for someone else to come in and open up a new bar.

  • Speaking of space for rent, isn't this Muddy Waters?

No, that's the store next to Claudine's VIP French Cleaners. Muddy Waters is further up toward GAP.
  • hey, this is a cue for all of us, "yeah, we'll invest in the neighborhood!" types to rush out and open up a cool new bar for us all to hang out at.

    *not it.*
  • Subject: cell towers = health concerns

people might want to read about the folks in park slope fighting cell towers due to health concerns.
  • hmmm... opening a bar... thinking thinking

    I was wondering about that....
  • I kicked the bar opening idea around with a few folks around a year ago. I'd be willing to kick the idea again. especially if we can all agree that selective pricing structures (a.k.a. Ripple) are not on the table.

cafes are more problematic -- you really need either a lot of traffic (a LOT), a liquor license (which presents a whole other batch of issues) or cheap rent. also, selling food is one of the trickiest things on earth -- it's (one of the reasons) why a lot of good idea type places don't do so hot (Half, for instance).

Yeah man, no pricing depending on the way the wind blows and crap. You know, if hypothetically any DHer opens up a bar, every bar owner in the neighborhood would probably kick your ass for the potential loss of business. I may (or may not) be thinking of a place on/east of Underhill.
  • I vote keeping Utopia closed. :D I like not being woken up at 4am by huge brawls.

hah, I'm with you on that one. though, I am amused that Utopia coexisted with the cops next door.
  • sounds like utopia didn't live up to its name...or perhaps it did all too well. that's so in the spirit of utopian settlements: at first, the going's good, but then, later, everything hits the fan.

love that name, though. the new bar (AHEM) should keep it.
