Body Reserve: 6-8P
I've done some researching on these boards about local gyms. As much as I would like to join the Y, it's a bit of a haul from GAP, and the farther it is, the less of a chance I'll go. Eastern Athletic is too much for me to spend, and Crunch just doesn't seem to be suited to my particular tastes (plus, the prices seem to vary depending on what day you go and who you talk to). That leaves me with Body Reserve.
I would likely be going after work, and would probably be there at some point between 6-8P. Can any of you current (or recent) members let me know about that time of day? Will I have problems getting a machine? If so, which seem to be the hardest to get on?
Also, the reviews I've read on these boards seem fairly positive. Feel free to let me know the bad along with the good (are there a lot of broken machines, etc.).
You can PM me if you'd rather not speak poorly of a local business in a public forum (if there is anything poor to say, that is).
I appreciate the info.

well, if you just want to lose weight, here's my 2 step program:
1> bike to work
2> substitute all drinks except gray goose with water.
(because there is no substitute for grey goose (except belvedere) )
FTW!
you are welcome in advance. -
I've been at 6pm and there are good classes at that time and some free machines. It gets a little busy because of the after work crowd, but I'm sure by 8pm that they're clearing out. Except, I'm lame and haven't gone lately. I think the summer closing hours are earlier than usual. Check out their website just in case.
(PS... LOVE the classes there, not pretentious, regular 'ol bodies, no models, and super down to earth instructors that are happy to help you) -
i'm curious as to what your issues with Crunch are. i've been a member since it was the PS Sports Club.
it is what it is. there's a variety of machines, free weights, etc., which makes it a good place for solo working out. if you're into classes, i do thnk the entertainment value is emphasized more than the exercise value, which was a sad change for the place. spin's still good, and you hold out hope for yoga once the first floor opens up.
personal training used to be better as well.
again, good, spacious place to get a good solo workout. -
My problem with Crunch is mainly the fact that I can't go in and find out the price of membership. All I want is to know how much it'll be on a monthly or yearly basis. I don't need someone to talk to me about all their services, etc.
Crunch would actually be perfect, as it's the closest gym to me. However, I'm not going to sit around and listen to their pitch.
Thanks,

Call crunch up and tell them you are not stepping foot inside until the give you complete pricing for monthly dues and initiation fees. They gave them to me on the phone (ages ago).
Body Reserve is fine, but I have not gone there in the evenings. Make them give you a free pass to try it out based on your schedule.
Sometimes the best gym is closest to where you live.
If you have health insurance, some health insurance companies send you money after you work out a certain number of times.
It is sad that you have to pay anything to access a good gym and take care of yourself (i.e. combat diabetes, depression, constipation, obesity, and other bad things). Everyone should have free access to clean, modern gyms.
Good luck! -
I still like the Body Reserve as a decent local and inexpensive option. To be totally honest though, I think they're starting to fall short with upkeep and maintenance. It's never been a fancy state-of-the-art kind of place, but lately I've noticed a lot of the wear and tear hasn't been addressed - machines have broken pieces, ripped pads, etc. Hell there's even duct tape on the Arc Trainers! I guess I just feel like things have been let slide for a longer than reasonable period.

ask to talk to Tom Pollizzi, the general manager. be straight with him, and tell him what's holding you back from joining. he's a pretty reasonable guy.

I went into Crunch last night after work, and although they were a bit shy on rates at first, I finally got them to just show their hand (and to be honest, they didn't go over the top with the hard sell). The rates were reasonable for a two year plan.
That's a bit of a commitment, but I'm likely to stick around, so I might go for it.
So, the offer that was made to me expires in a week. I'm going to get a pass to try it out (and the same for Body Reserve), but I'm now leaning towards Crunch.
Anyone want to try to talk me out of it (or give me reasons not to join Body Reserve)? I'm up to listening to all opinions. And while I'm mentioning opinions, thanks to everyone that has contributed to this topic so far. -
From my own experience as a gym goer, the closer it is, the more frequently you'll go.

good to hear, Anthony. best of luck in figuring out what's best for you.
i'm in week one of my 24 sessions at the new 5th Ave Fitness Collective. so far, so good...
