The Weather Channel and NYC weather
am I the only one who has noticed that the forecasts on TWC lately have been HORRIBLY wrong for the past couple of weeks? Example- yesterday it said high of 82 and thunderstorms, it turned out to be over 90 by their own thermometers and barely rained. Right now it says partly cloudy this morning with a high of 82 but its already 76 and I would imagine it'll fly right past 82. Countless times it's said rain but there's been none, and it almost always WAY underestimates the temperature (by 5+ degrees.)
I know weather isn't an exact science but I find it kind of comical that it's wrong every single day. Anyone else?
(note- yes I work from home and sometimes have nothing better to do than reload the weather channel website. so sue me.)

yes, i noticed it. you are not alone.

Not that I'm making excuses for the guessing game that is meteorology, but I think that there are also very localized conditions in NYC in general, 'specially when it comes to temp - closer to the water, changes in elevation, massive buildings, etc.
...but yeah, they've been holding us hostage with threats of doom and gloom thunderstorms for days, now... -

i took a weather class a couple years ago in college - the professor was a meteorologist and this was the only forecasting site he used, he said it's usually the most accurate. i've found it's pretty on point, as much as forecasting can be. -
partly cloudy this morning? I have not seen a single cloud since i got up at 8. Wtf.

Listen up people - here is the only reliable weather forecaster in the 'hood -

i've noticed that with TWC/Weather-dot-com... such as it saying it's raining when it's bright and sunny, or vice versa. i think it's not frequently or regularly updated to account for more recent meteorological developments.
i find that Accuweather.com is way more up-to-date (although even that site is off sometimes) than TWC. -
I'm sorry. It's my fault. I saw the forecast said rain and decided I didn't need to water the garden. That seems to be all it takes to ensure that the rain will miss the neighborhood.

The forecasts are off as they really don't know what will happen. They are literally just making best guesses. I firmly believe that the weather is being modified for nefarious purposes. Since the Woodpecker Grid appeared on July 4 1976, things have been strange in the sky relating to weather.

I thought I was the only one checking repeatedly only to find that they are really wrong. I even do the hour-by-hour to try to figure out the best time to run errands before the downpour that never seems to happen. One day I was running around like Chicken Little freaking out about how the rain was going to wash out the afternoon and I had so much to do before then. It never even drizzled.
And the iPhone weather is even more cruel. It changes the "forecast" midday just so it can be right. At least weather.com is ok with being consistently wrong. -
okay, i'll bite: what's the woodpecker grid? and how does one control the weather, anyway?
-
It says high of 79 today...lets all wait and see! if its actually only 79 it'll be really nice (and I'll be annoyingly skateboarding down 7th street if anyone wants to beep at me and scare the hell out of me [which happened yesterday]) TMI for this thread...
Anyway, its already 74 so im sure it'll break 80. Who wants to take bets?! -
I love the Forecast Fox add-on for Firefox. It's pretty accurate. Today it says high of 82. It's Accu-Weather based.

Yup. Check your local weather there, then go to the radar [ http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/full_loop.php ] and you'll know pretty much everything the weatherman knows, if not more.
If clouds are heading the general direction of NYC, the weatherman or yahoo has to give a % likelihood of rain or what have you. But I prefer to look at the actual radar.
I can't tell you how many times rain was predicted, but I could clearly see that the clouds were going to miss NYC, or even miss Brooklyn, or my neighborhood.
I swear by this:

As for the wrong temperatures, I can't say. As long as the temperature is reasonably within what's predicted, I'm good. I care more about humidity predictions than temp predictions. -
I watered the garden again last night, now I just ran around the apartment closing windows because the sky just opened up. I'm telling you people it's me, all me. I am all powerful.

If thats the case, please water the garden on Sunday and Monday as I'll be at the beach then.
Or don't your powers stretch that far?!
