Dizzy the cat needs a home!!!!!!

Some of you may remember "Dizzy" the orange-and-white kitty I found outside my apartment building during the early June heatwave.

Well, I've been fostering him ever since, and trying to find him a place in a forever home, or at least with a foster organization or no-kill shelter.

To date, I have called 63 different places, some as far away as Massachusetts and the Catskills, and have gotten exactly the same reaction from all of them: "We don't have room. Its kitten season."

Now, I am a reasonable person and I accept that, but I wonder what these places would do with a cat that was just dumped on their doorstep? And these are places with resources and experience with cats, unlike me who is an animal lover but has no experience taking in a lost, scared cat.

Well, long story short, 2 months later "Dizzy" still needs a home. I've posted on Craig's List and received no responses. Enquiries at vets and pet stores have netted nothing.

I am going to try to take him to the Kensington Kitties mobile adoption van on Saturday, but have not been able to yet because I am a busy person and have been out of town or busy most weekends.

Dizzy is approximately 1yo, orange and white and *very* cute, medium sized (9-10lbs), playful, affectionate, litter trained, and - neutered, up-to-date on his shots, and FIV/Feline Leukemia Negative. Basically, he is a healthy, happy cat who would love a good home and patiend and kind people to call family. He would get along well with other cats, and has interacted well with my small dog (see avatar).

If anyone has interest in adopting (or even meeting) Dizzy PLEASE PM me!

I am going out of town beginning August 27 and NEED to have a place for Dizzy by that date, as I will be gone for over a month, and cannot afford to hire someone to look after him while I'm gone, nor can I continue to keep him indefinitely.

Mod, please make sticky.

  • Pike County Humane Society (570) 296-7654 is a no kill shelter. I got my 2 dogs from there 4 yrs ago and recently my daughter and I turned in a chow we "liberated" from one of those fish warehouse/garages. If you need a local address (you might) give me a PM and we'll coordinate a story.

    PS that's in Milford PA
  • Did you try Sean Casey rescue group? I don't think I have ever heard them refuse an animal
  • Did you see this post on your original Found Cat thread?

Before managing to get Jazzy in with the KK ladies (which was great timing) I made dozens of phone calls. As Caseople said, it's kitten season and every shelter or agency is overcrowded. Sean Conway told me to call him every day, which is what I would have done if I hadn't found a foster home for Jazzy.
Sean Casey. He now has the Hamilton Dog House, a new adoption facility on E. 3rd Street. I had a customer who was interested in adopting my 2 foster kittens but then decided he only wanted one kitten so I sent him there. Apparently they're packed as well. Kensington Kitties has no room for more cats and someone brought an adopted cat back to them on Sunday. As Bergenites has realized, foster homes are few and far between. There just aren't many people willing to change their lifestyles and take on the responsibility/expense.
  • Shit. I have done that before. Sean Casey. I'm in the Carribean drinking Red Stripes. Stray kitties are following me around over here too!
  • Yes, I called Sean Casey. Several times, actually. He was not very helpful and basically told me I was SOL.
  • :x that sucks! Sorry to hear that.
  • Update: I took Dizzy to 2 adoption "centers" this weekend with no luck. He really hates being in a cage, though he calmed down after a while, and was SO happy when I got him back home and he could run around and play.

However, I'm still desperate to find him a home, soon. We're leaving on August 27 and he needs a place by then. I have one option to take him to a shelter in PA (Thank you Modsqad!) but I would rather do that only as a last resort. He doesn't deserve to spend endless hours in a cage, and he really has turned into a fantastic cat after all his troubles in the beginning.

    Anyone?
  • Have you advertised on Craig's List for a foster home while you are away? I always get several good responses and since you only have one rescued cat you only need one foster home. You will definitely find one foster home on Craig's List if you start advertising now. People aren't going to adopt until after Labor Day. Everyone is busy with summer vacations, getting kids ready to go back to school, etc. Fall is a great time for people to start thinking about welcoming a new cat into their home. Have you contacted Mutts and Mitts? They may be able to take him if they have space. Please PM me if you need their contact information. Have you created flyers and posted them all over PH and PS? Finding a home for a rescued cat is a lot of work but it does happen with patience and a lot of determination. Who is taking care of your dog while you are away? Maybe that person can also take care of your rescued cat.
  • I met Dizzy today and am adopting him tomorrow. I live a few blocks away from Bergenites and have been following Dizzy's story for several weeks. We have 2 cats already but we have a big house so there's plenty of room for one more.

Dizzy is adorable. I don't think he likes me (yet), but he likes my daughter. And I think he'll be a great playmate for my male cat, who looks just like him, only shorter and stumpier.
  • YEAH!1!!!!! OMG SOO HAPPY!

Trust me, dizzy will love you more than anything. Just make sure you're the one that puts the food in the bowl. He'll know who brings home the bacon soon enough. Congratulations and have patience and an open heart. This kitty will be part of your family in no time.
Send pic of the new kitty family once Dizzy is settled in!
  • Thank you Mamacita. I have infinite patience when it comes to cats (with people, not so much). I adopted one of my cats thru a shelter and the other was a stray. Both have issues, but don't we all? I will definitely post pics. I'm excited about Dizzy becoming part of our family!

And I have to give big props to Bergenite for taking Dizzy in. Seems like he probably got kicked out of his first home for not being a kitten anymore.
  • Yay! Dizzy has a home! We need pictures...lots of pictures
  • Congrats on your new addition!

And Bergenites - thanks for sticking in there with this guy.

Yes and like Flexi said - lots of pictures
  • antigone, I cannot thank you and your family enough! I know Dizzy will have a fantastic life with you and your family (and other cats) and I am so grateful that you want to include him!

I will miss the little guy - he has been difficult at times but seeing his transformation into a great cat has been very rewarding, and seeing him go to a great home makes it all worth it!!!!!!
  • YAY!!!

    full marks, all around.
