2-for-1 Happy Hours
I'm new to the neighborhood, having moved from the East Village, and I was wondering if any bars in the area have 2-for-1 happy hours. I live near GAP, so anything in that area (which I guess also covers Prospect Heights) is doable. I would just like it in stumbling distance.
As for types of bars, I tend to prefer a bit of the dive type places, with loud punk and/or rock and country music. You know, East Village-esque bars. Specifically, if you know it, something like the Library Bar on 1st and A.
Thanks, and maybe I'll see you after work tonight.

Alchemy on 5th ave has 2-4-1 happy hour and free fried chickpeas -yum

CattyShack -
If you like Library, you'd probably like Great Lakes (5th Ave and 1st). Similar atmosphere. They don't have 2 fer 1, but they do have some sort of happy hour special.
Anyone know what Sepia's happy hour special is these days? Or Beast? -

Yeah, but I wouldn't consider any of those anything like Library Bar or that type of bar.

Not 2-for-1 and not super close to you, but Aji has great happy hour specials and Burger Bar or whatever it's called now is half off ANYTHING, which is basically 2-for-1! AND on Wednesdays, they do it all night. Just don't eat there and you'll be fine!
Kitchen Bar has an awesome happy hour too, $3 sangrias etc. -
I second Great Lakes. It's not as cool as it used to be, but it has that dirty and dark eastside feel. If you like rockabilly a trip over to Hanks on 3rd ave (out of bounds, I know) is a great 'ol country dive.

Oh duh I didn't even read what kind of bar you were looking for. Sorry. Too bad BarBQ isn't still open, you would have loved that place.
-
I believe before 6pm Dram Shop has 2 for 1 drinks.
-
Thanks for the options. I might swing by either Great Lakes or Hank's tonight. If not, I'll do a stroll down Vanderbilt to see what they have to offer. I seem to have read some good things about the bars on that street.

dram has 1/2 price (2 for 1) rom 3-6 on weekdays and noon-3 on weekends. good deal

Wait...BarBQ on 6th ave and 20th is closed??!!??
When? Why? -
cattyshack has a jukebox upstairs. on certain evenings (like tonight) the bartender is pretty into sublime and such, but will listen to my ipod and the crazy punk on it. and the deck is pretty unbeatable.
-
No issues with straight guys at Cattyshack? I'd been to Meow Mix once or twice in the past with no problems at all, but want to make sure the policy at Cattyshack is open to everyone. (Pretty sure this is a lesbian bar, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).
-
Yea, it seems to be cool. However there have been stories posted here that some straight guys have caught some vibes.

They closed last month--the owners sold the place. But it should reopen in the next week or two with a slightly different menu. It's now Safe Haven Bar & Grill, and Noel from The Gate will be bartending. He always plays the best music and is so laid back--no attitude there. [/friend of both former and current owners] -
meow mix's former owner is the owner of cattyshack, so you're fine. I know plenty of straight guys who've been there - even during club nights.
the 2-4-1 is 4-8 p.m. every day - just find out what the specials are. I think it's the well drinks, drafts, etc. but I can't swear. I'd just ask to see the happy hour menu.
also, the 'shack was written up in the nytimes last year for the fact that so many straight guys hang out there on weekend days b/c the owners are huge fans of sports, so they have all the packages and just play basketball, football, baseball, soccer constantly during the day. if you're in to that. I find it to be welcoming but, as someone else said, other folks have mentioned that they felt singled out or weird there. I figure if you're just confident in showing up and hanging out, having fun, you'll be fine. -
Yeah I've been to Cattyshack with my husband, and he has been there by himself, and everyone was cool. Felt like hanging out in any old bar.
-
BarBQ is closed? I almost went there last weekend. GAP as in The Gap? I'm confused. I think I need a drink.
-
Jeffrey... Is that a real sign?
Yeah it is funny but on another level.. you get what you pay for... You order two drinks then what is so nuts about expecting that you pay for each one? The 2 for 1 drinks thing happens on the low end of quality anyway. If I like to drink single malt scotch then I don't expect (ever/never) that if I order an Oban or a Glenwhatever that because it is 5pm on wed. I will get 2 for one. That is just the way it be.
I don't mean to discredit the OP's original question at all I am just slyly thinking that if you are so low for cash that you must search out 2 for 1's you might as well buy the bottle of whatever and drink at home. Gotta be far cheaper that way. -

Hmm... well the vibe isn't quite what the OP is looking for but I bartend some good happy hours at Two Boots (4-6 m-f)where everything is buy one get one free... draft beer to top shelf.
We generally shoo the kids away from the bar so people can get some early evening drink on. -
DrabRabbit.. I just re-read the original post and I now think I understand what you said .. which I think translates to the OP would never spring for the expense of a single malt no matter what time of day or night it might be.
I have been in Two Boots many a time and how do you shoo them?.. Perhaps suggest that they go play out in the traffic on 7th Ave. ? -
Barrette on Vanderbilt Avenue and Bergen has 2 for one happy hour on draft beers during the weeknights.
-
Veets, what I'm willing to pay depends on what I feel like drinking. If all I want is beer, I'd much rather get 2-for-1 as opposed to spending $5-$7 each. If I'm in the mood for bourbon, I'll expect to pay more for a quality drink.
Yes, it might be cheaper to just buy a bottle and drink at home, but I go out because I like to have people around to chat with. And if I can save a few bucks during happy hour, that's an added bonus.

announce that someone has left their fixed-gear bike unlocked again
gone in a flash -
Wrong end of the neighborhood, but Royale (5th Ave b/w 12th and 13th) had/has a 2 for 1 happy hour and is a cool place, early in the evening at least.
Also 4th Ave Pub has a good happy hour, $2 off everything. Not 2 for 1 but getting a good draft beer for the price of a High Life is nice. -

the 4th ave pub happy hour goes until 8pm too so it's a good one even though it isn't 2 for 1. nice yard too.
