Pequena

  • for those not inclined to click through...
    Pequeña
    86 South Portland
I see Pequena is run by the Maggie Brown/Olea people
    (I haven't been yet.)

    Compare and contrast to
    Habana Outpost
757 Fulton St. at S. Portland

in my opinion HB has okay food/drink (hate the frozen fauxijto) and very fun ambiance....LOVE their restrooms (a model of funky cute eco-friendly design)

    any thoughts?
I wholeheartedly agree about the focus of the restaurant being aimed at 20-something hipsters.

My wife and I went once and we won't go back. The food was okay but the reason we won't go back has nothing to do with the food. The service was awful and the attitude of the people in the place was highly humorous (and I don't mean in a good way).

If the kids want to have a "too cool for school" restaurant that serves mediocre Mexican food y'all are welcome to take my table.
  • I like this place for delivery... we don't really ever eat in tho.
  • I must say we have always been treated nicely when my boyfriend and I go. The service does seem slow, however. I feel like I am competing (adn losing) to the very busy take-out business. But it is nice enough when we don't feel like going all fancy-like at one of the higher-end spots.
  • We live 3 blocks away on lafayette. One late night we ordered and it took more than an hour for delivery. The management could not have cared less when we complained. Life's too short and there are too many good options--Mexican and otherwise--in the 'hood. I highly recommend Bonita if you're loking for quality Mexican.
  • yes agreed, slow service. but i love the food! i prefer it over habana outpost.
  • I like the food at Pequena though agreed that the service is slow.
    Habana's better for atmosphere
Bonita - yuck - found bone in my food TWICE and drinks were awful
  • Habana is a great time. I had the cuban sandwich there this past weekend and loved it.
  • Castro's on Myrtle is the real deal for Mexican. Pequena is fun but it isn't real Mexican food (although I don't really think there's "real" Mexican anywhere in NYC).
