Another salon review- Dickson Hairshop
http://dicksonhairshop.com/
Many of you have read my Medusa review and yes, I do still love Medusa...however, after moving into my own apt (ftw!) I'm broker than broke and was looking for something a little cheaper- dropping $200 for a cut and dye job just isn't in the budget. A friend had recommended a guy named Josh at Dickson Hairshop and said he was good and reasonably priced, so I decided to give them a shot.
First- the shop is TINY. I do mean TINY. There are two chairs, one wash bowl and a teeny bathroom. Thats it. When I was there, Josh was the only one working but the owner works there occasionally as well. It is cute, clean and well decorated but if you're looking for an ikea-style, chinatown hairplace this is NOT it. Vintage chairs and an older washbowl...no prob for me. I thought it was cute.
Josh kicked major ass. Bleached my roots (in about 1/2 the time because he actually listened to me about using 40 vol bleach and not making me sit there for 6 hours with 20 vol) and gave me an amazing cut...and I do mean an AMAZING cut. I have thick multitextured hair which I'm trying to grow out and this is the first haircut I've had that is manageable and actually has a STYLE to it. He thinned it out substantially (much cooler!) but its still really fluffy as I told him I liked. Additional perks include a shot of really nice whiskey to sip on, good conversation, NO pressure to buy ANYTHING (not even mentioned) and he's super hot which never hurts
The whole thing also ran me about $50 less than anywhere I've been in the city. This is my new salon of choice.
For the record, I also watched him cut another girls hair while I was in there (she called and was complaining that she was going to be late to something unless he took her early so, after verifying with me, he took her in between my color and cut. He was very apologetic and I had hours to kill before meeting my bf anyway since it was so much faster than I expected...) Anyway she had SUPER long straight hair and ended up with a beautiful cut with some added layers. She looked really pretty.
Just paying it forward, girls

Cool. Especially the part about the other girl with long hair. He didn't try to talk her into cutting it short, right? I just want to go somewhere that is long hair friendly.

No, she said she was growing it for locks of love though (to donate it for a wig.) But he didnt say anything, and he didnt pressure me either...

Very good. Thanks!

IF YOU ARE WILLING TO TRAVEL TO CANARSIE, BROOKLYN 11236
I have been making the trek from WHEREVER I move all the way back to come get my hair cut and cared for by the very loving Lillian of Sunshine Scissors.
They have a nice salon run by a very friendly Staff including the Italian Brooklyn Boy Donald and the very kind and skilled Lillian
For about $30 you get a cut and style (depending on length $35 for long hair) High lights gloss, style and cut came to $55 - $60
I highly recommend them, so be sure to support your small long time Brooklyn Businesses.

I made an appointment at Dickson on Friday during the day...very excited! I've been cutting my own hair for the last 3 years now, can you believe it?

Ohhh yeah, they were perfect for me. Good recommendation, Carmen, thanks!

Update-
I got my second cut/dye job at dickson on saturday and had a total blast and have an awesome haircut. At first I was a little tentative about the cut because he straightened my naturally curly hair (which I requested, but I always get a little nervous about washing it and having the curls go crazy) but after finally biting the bullet and washing it I found that the cut is freakin amazing and the bleach job looks awesome. $140 for a double process color (bleaching my 9 weeks of terrible root growth plus a toner) and the cut. Money well spent.
Oh and he's still adorable. Doooo it ladies, dooo it. -
Round three- went back this time for just a roots touchup since my haircut from OCTOBER is actually still looking awesome (!!!) Great experience, roots look amazing after a double process as usual. $80 and he did some cleaning up of the cut (a few snips here or there) for no charge. Love this place and I would totally recommend Josh for anyone looking to go blond!
