  • i was home all day until 10pm and heard nothing but some kids setting of firecrackers. what time? is it the firecrackers you heard?
  • the cops had the whole block taped off at classon, couldnt have been firecrackers
  • I heard something very late at night, possibly even midnight? It sounded like at least 10 shots if that is what it was.
  • There was definitely a shooting (or at least shots fired), it was around 6 pm and I was right around the corner on Eastern Parkway. The shooting took place on Classon and Lincoln. I heard about 5 shots go off and then several people came running up Classon away from Lincoln and towards E Pkwy screaming that someone was shooting. Have not seen any report about it though.
  • wow at 6pm? that's broad daylight!
  • Yes thats what i was talking about ... i called the precinct and they told me there was no shooting. What a bunch of bitches.

isn't there that wicked dodgy bodega on the northwest corner of that block? i am totally not surprised!
  • In the 5+ years I've been in ProHo, I've not seen even one news report of any shootings I KNEW took place, {and sometimes saw the dead bodies afterwards, mostly on Washington Ave}. Why? I have no idea. It's like a big secret when bad things happen here. Word gets around, though. That's one reason this forum is so valuable. Pays to talk to your neighbors.

I called about a mugging 1/2 block from my apartment. The officer/receptionist/whateveryoucallit who answered the phone barked back "I don't have to tell you that!" Remarkably, I kept my cool, and got through to a very friendly and accommodating Lieutenant who told me everything I wanted to know.

From my experience, the 77th definitely seems to have a bit of a public relations issue. Some of them definitely want to keep people informed, but not everybody is on the same page.

Yeah I got past the first lady, she transfered me to somebody else who said they dont keep records or something ... I was like WTF??? So she transfered me to someboody else ... ended up getting nowhere
  • I was mugged and beaten up pretty badly on Saint Johns Place between Underhill and Washington (I also happen to live on this stretch) Sunday night (19th). The police did not seem too interested in getting a description of the attacker and seemed to me to stop taking notes after "tall, black and in his late 20's", cutting me off when I offered descriptions of his clothing, what direction he ran in etc. My overall feeling was that they just didn't care. I've also had my apartment robbed twice in the past year. Both times eliciting a very lackluster response from the police. I'm very upset about the crime in this neighborhood and the lack of policing. It's no fun having to eat through a straw and knowing that the guy who nearly killed you likely lives on your block, if not your street.
  • Whoa, daveb! That's my block! (And Isa's and someone else's I believe) What time and where exactly did that happen?
  • that's horrible. best wishes for a speedy recovery. how sad about the apathetic police response.

It was Saturday night at about 11 pm. I was walking towards Washington, a little past the middle of the block on the left side of the street (if facing towards Washington). There's a spot right near where that nice old homeless lady always hangs out that at night was really dark. The guy cornered me up againt the fence told me to give him my wallet and beat the crap out of me. If you heard and loud, frantic screams of "HELP!!!", that was me. I managed to get away after my yelling brought a few people to their windows. He didn't manage to get anything off of me though one of his punches sent my glasses flying (if you saw a guy scouring the street with a flashlight late that evening, that too, was me). I'm pretty sure it was one of the guys that either lives or hangs out in front of the apartment building closest to the Washington Ave corner. Who knows though. He just sauntered off as I scrambled my skinny bleeding self in the opposite direction.
  • Daveb, so sorry that happened to you. I am embarassed that the police treated you so bad!
  • That blows, I had an incident with local PD and they were pretty useless and seemed pressed to be on their way. Glad you're ok anyways
  • Dave I am so sorry to hear this - and the way the cops treated you really sucks. You should call the police department's community affairs division and report it. If I am not mistaken you can contact this division of the police department to get them to assign a patrol that will come by the block a few times a night.

Pepper spray and mace may be illegal but they are readily available here in NY - but you didn't hear that from me :)
  • My next door neighbor was mugged and pistol-whipped in the vestibule of our building on st johns between franklin and classon, on a friday evening, between maybe 11pm and midnight. The guy must have been following him and pushed him into the vestibule when he unlocked the door.

I like to think that this kind of stuff is an anomaly. This is my first summer in "proho", and it seems like things are a lot worse with the warm weather.
  • DAMN that sucks. Call Letitia James maybe she will do something ....
  • Dave that sucks. I always feel so safe on my block because there are always people hanging out all night. This is upsetting news.
  • Wow, that's awful, and I wish you a speedy recovery inside and out. A few years ago I went to community safety meeting at the 77th precinct way up in Crown Heights, I think. I was pretty appalled/scared at the neighborhood there, it makes our end of the precinct look really tame. I wonder if the cops are so busy up there they just can't be bothered?

On the other hand, I got my first summons for riding my bike on the sidewalk yesterday, the cops were very interested in making sure I felt like crap, and wouldn't let me off with a warning, instead gave me a ludicrous court date! A-holes. Great allocation of their resources, don't you think? :x

Normally my block is pretty busy too. Then again, it's busy with people selling drugs, smoking weed, gambling and basically being sketchy. There's good people, don't get me wrong, but that block of Saint Johns, specifically my side has a pretty aggressive presense of angry thug types. While they mostly talk bullshit to themselves, I'm pretty sure the guy who mugged me is from that crowd and I KNOW that when I was robbed twice, it came from that crowd as well (the robbers broke in through via the roof). It's scary stuff, but it's also sad. I see a lot wasted potential spent on that street, though at this point the only sympathy I feel is for the parents of these guys.

    You nailed it.
  • My block and your block are the same block. I'm friendly with some of the guys that hang out so I guess I feel protected but you never know.
  • Part of the problem is a ridiculous NYPD rule that doesn't let cops work in the neighborhood they live in. The result is an occupation force of thugs from Jersey and Long Island that hate the people they're supposed to be protecting.

THAT is the by far the most insightful and interesting thing I've heard all day. I'm going to look into that. Thanks.
  • Funny you should mention it, Carnivore, I was just having drinks with some people and we were discussing how cops are supposed to live in the five boroughs but worm out of it. I think you've hit the nail on the head with that characterization. It's fine in some neighborhoods but in others it's antagonistic and prevents the cops from knowing the neighborhood.
  • Where are all the people that give advice on how to "protect " yourselves. I want to here some new GREAT ideas. i.e. "walk in the middle of the street." "carry s whistle" we all live in a rough innercity neighborhood. There is reason that rent is cheaper here then places like SOHO. Unfortunatly some of you haven't realized this yet
  • Weird, I'm sitting in front of my building on my vespa half naked typing this into my blackberry while listening to my Ipod. Are you suggesting I should go inside and put some clothes on. I had no idea. Hopefully this guy approaching me will be able to break a hundred because I want to buy some ice cream from Mr Softee first but I know he doesn't take anything more than 20s.
  • This one time? This guy tried to mug me. He was just some punk teenager trying to 'prove' himself, and he didn't have a weapon or anything and I was bigger than him and probably coulda defended myself but I didn't really feel like hand-to-hand combat at the time, so I ran. Ran like the fucking wind. It worked. How's that for advice?
