The family of a hip-hop model who graced the glossy pages of urban magazines and appeared in gritty rap videos was mourning his death Sunday at the hands of an unknown gunman.
Barnabe Rivera, 26, died at Brooklyn Hospital Center on Saturday afternoon after a gunshot blast to the head. He left behind a wife who was seven months pregnant.
An unknown shooter walked up to the rising star as he hung outside the Sputnick bar in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, and fired on him once, hitting his yellow hat.
Police said the baseball cap, designed with a metal crown, was a sign that Rivera was part of the Latin Kings gang.
His family contended that the hat's emblem was a mere fashion statement.
"He bought it to match his yellow Coogi sweater," said Rivera's half-sister Francine Cutler. "He is not down with anything, gangs or anything."
Police said they were still investigating the murder yesterday.
Cutler acknowledged that her brother sold drugs as a youngster but gave it up for construction work in the Bronx between modeling gigs.
Rivera appeared in various music videos, including playing the drums in the R&B singer Amerie's 2005 hit "One Thing." He also posed in the pages of The Source magazine and appeared in various hip-hop fashion shows.
