http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/08/19/elevator.mugging/

"The video, released Monday by the New York Police Department, shows 85-year-old Lillian France accompanied by an unknown man on Thursday in the elevator of an apartment building in Brooklyn's Prospect Heights neighborhood."

  • it happened on Washington Ave.
  • It's just because they (the news organizations) don't live here, and, to be fair, Washington Ave. is the "official" border of PH and CH. Hell, most of the people on this board can't agree on where CH starts, and they DO live here!

1050 Washington....btwn Empire and Sullivan ( 6-7 blocks south of Eastern Parkway). Northern edge of PLG, I think?

I haven't heard of extending the PH border down to Empire before, but whatever...
  • It's so totally Crown Heights its not even funny! Anything south of Eastern Parkway. Different zip code, different precinct.

    But now we're all :sign-offtopic:

I'm sure somebody would be willing to debate you on it. Never seen such a contrary group in my life...

...you know, except on the rest of the internet.
  • Is there some place to download images of crime suspects? Alternatively, is anyone talented enough to craft a "wanted" poster in photoshop using a still image from that video clip so we could post it all over the Prospect Park subway station and around Washington/Empire, guerilla style.

It seems like this crime should be very solvable, and it annoys me.

    No they wouldn't.

    Yes you have.

    There ya go.

You must always remember to never use the word never. Always.

Extracting a pic should be pretty easy. I'm not averse to helping paste it up with a description and whatever. *shrug*
  • i mean if you must ...call it south prospect heights
but before you do check with all the realtors so everyone is in agrement
  • Half-answering my own question, pictures of "most wanted" suspects are available here: http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/most_wanted/most_wanted.shtml

Doesn't help, in this case - most of the pics of of murderers.

I tried taking a screenshot of the video and printing it out. Its too blurry to be of much value on a poster. However, image manipulation is not my strong point. To drive this point home, I actually used Excel to crop the pic.

no such thing as prospect heights south. sorry. no.
  • For me, the eastern border of Prospect Heights is Washington and the southern border is Eastern Parkway. So I was shocked to see an old neighborhood map of Brooklyn in the Brooklyn Central library that did put the border several blocks south of Eastern Parkway. Has anyone else seen this?!? It makes sense, if you think that the neighborhood is named after Mount Prospect.

Ah, explains it. I was wondering where on Washington in PH one would find a tall building needing so many elevators.

This crime is definitely scary. Would make me think twice about getting into an elevator with another person.
  • it's time we stop,
    hey what's that sound
    everybody look what's goin down

    Par-a-noiastrikes deep
into your life it will creep
it starts when your always afraid
step out of line the man come and take you away

    we better stop
    hey what's that sound
    everybody look what's going down

It was a bad thing that happened... Does it really matter what square inch of Brooklyn the crime happened in?

    No.
That's not what that neighborhood is called.

And the realtors are the last people anyone should ask about what neighborhood a place is since they notoriously and systematically lie about these things.

    arches,

There's nothing more than a gas station and another 1 or 2 story bldg (and the FDNY communications bldg and antennae tower) in the vicinity of 1050 Washington which is just above the southern border of Crown Heights (the northern side of Empire Blvd).

This attack happened another block north of that, at 1015 Washington just North of Sullivan Place, west of the Ebbets Field Houses in Crown Heights.

PLG doesn't start until you cross over to the other (South) side of Empire.

There is another name for that area of southern Crown Heights, however...will post it when I remember it.
  • Ah, I should have known better than to trust the address from the press, given their demonstrated lack of consistency. Close though...1015 sounds like 1050 if you mumble. Tks for the clarification.

I've been meaning to check out that area...my great grandparents lived on Sterling Street back in the day (way back in the day....like 1930's) at an address that no longer exists, according to google maps.

FWIW, in a store on Eastern and Franklin last night was a 8x14 flyer containing info and a pic in regard to this crime. Brooklyn Crime Squad Unit or something like that was the NYPD contact.
  • One funny thing I noticed is that Sterling Street addresses used to be broken on Google Maps, or at least was when I last checked.

It incorrectly pointed to another Sterling somewhere down in Canarsie or Gravesend or something (can't remember).

Ah, looks like they fixed it!

And wow, Google *finally* just added street view for our side of the park (and other adjacent areas).

For the longest time all they had were street views for just Flatbush Avenue over here (despite being extremely well fleshed-out in zilions of other neighborhoods), didn't bother to do street views for any other side streets or avenues.

Nice to see that PLG and other parts of Flatbush are finally on their map, so to speak.

obviously i was joking hence the connection to realtors
they jsut love to make extend areas past their boundaries to raise rent prices... East Williamsburg is a prime example
  • I See it as a good thing

I haven't been back to the library, but I did find this, which doesn't really prove much, but it's an interesting Brooklyn map from 1880:

Most interesting. The ninth ward definitely encompassed Prospect Heights, and extended to FRANKLIN and far south of Eastern. Crown Heights was the 24th ward. Anyways, so there is a political point for sure. Some more info:
    Lots of old maps.
    1867 Ward boundaries.
    1893 Ward boundaries.
  • You'll notice the 9th also extends across Atlantic. Wards don't necessarily correspond to specific neighborhoods. In fact, sometimes neighborhoods are intentionally split up to dilute a group's political power.

Yes, I agree. The old 9th doesn't extend across Atlantic though, FWIW.

As someone who grew up in that apartment projects, I prefer the term Ebbets Field Apartments. The term "Ebbets Field Houses" sounds too much like the projects, which they are not.
