Safety around PS 22-St Marks + Classon — Brooklynian

Safety around PS 22-St Marks + Classon

Possibly taking a great apartment right across the street from PS 22. Have lived in ProHo for years but on the west side of Washington Ave. Wondering about this neighborhood. Safe? Getting safer? Where are the ammenities? Just on Washington Ave.?
I also hear bad things about the Franklin Ave. C train. True?
Any help would be appreciated.

  • I live two blocks south of there. It's gentrifying RAPIDLY, and at this point I'm not sure if ProHo is really any safer. Washington isn't a magic border. I'd say walk around the area, and if you feel okay, take it. I love living in this area. We generally walk the three minutes into Washington/Prospect Heights area for groceries and restaurants and such, yes, but there's a great bodega on the corner of Park & Classon for your late-night or quick pickup needs.

I don't know about the C train, because I usually take the shuttle to the B/Q or walk to 7th Ave for the B/Q if it's nice out or I want a muffin on my way to work.
  • I have to agree with bluedove, I live on the same street as her (we're neighbors. Whee.) and it's a really nice area.

The people are (generally) friendly. The stores are nice and it's kept up well. I've only been living here since Oct. 1st, and I've never *really* felt unsafe. There have been uncomfortable moments, mostly just idiots on the street being idiots, but I've never felt worried long term.

Never had any problems with the Frankling Ave. C train, the only thing that's a pain is when you miss getting off the stop, or take the A to Nostrand Ave. I hate that stope, transferring to the Manhattan bound C train there's more of a pain than most stations.
  • I live on Putnam and get off and on at the Franklin ave. stop every morning and evening - it's fine, the little dry cleaner across from the library is really good and cheap too.
  • That area has undergone some major changes since the early 90s. I recently passed by the corner of Lincoln and Classon. It looks like that huge building that takes up the entire east side of Classon is vacant - the entrance on Eastern Parkway states that many of the apartments are being renovated. Years ago, the street-level shops were occupied, but now they are shuttered, and there's a realtor sign on the building. Across the street, on the SW corner of Classon and E. Pkwy, another building is vacant. My guess is that this area will eventually wind up looking like the blocks due west (in terms of gentrification, that is).

Definitely. And sooner rather than later. It's already changed dramatically in the two years I've been there.
  • do you think if they move some of the Nets Stadium housing over to the east side of Washington it will hurt or help the property value?
  • i would think it could only help... although im hoping that whole thing doesn't come to fruition.
  • I live three blocks south and generally like the area quite a bit, but there are drawbacks. I personally have never felt unsafe, and I'm sure the neighborhood is gentrifying rapidly, but Franklin Ave., just one block East, is still not very well kept up, and the area still lacks many amenities (decent grocery store, bar, decent coffee shop). There are a lot of positives, yes, and I'm sure change is no doubt on the way, but you should know that you're not moving to the middle of Park Slope in terms of convenience (though you probably already knew that, if you've been living in ProHo for so long...)
  • What's the story on the massive building with all the balconies going up on St. Marks btwn Classon + Franklin? It's ugly and project looking, don't you think? And what with the lower half? Parking?
  • Subject: Franklin Ave

There is an organization called Crow Hill Community Association that is dedicated to improving Franklin Ave. The meet at 705 Franklin Ave on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. You are invited to attend

Yes, its hideous, and no, i think its going to be some sort of supermarket. At least thats what my rental manager told me a year ago.
  • Subject: safety around PS 22 on St Marks

I bought a house on this block a year and a half ago. the four of us living in the building have never had any problems and in fact know a lot of our neighbors. This is a super block. the block party this summer -- the first in ten years -- was one of the best events of my summer.

that said, there are some unsupervised and under stimulated teens on the block who are loud and obnoxious but mostly to each other. sadly, a young man was shot right before thanksgiving. there is also some low level drug dealing right near the corner of grand and st marks but our strategy is to be sort of super ficially friendly with the main guy and everyone leaves us alone as a result. (the benefit of the drug dealers is that someone is around late at night when you come from the Q or the brooklyn museum 2/3 stop). generally, it is a working class family vibe and in some ways feels safer to me than the other side of Washington, where I used to live because no one comes here to rob you! also, on the gentrification issue, my house cost $489,000 a year a half ago. a house in the same block just like ours got put on the market this fall for $650. they may not get it but still...! its changing fast.
