moving in labor day weekend? — Brooklynian

moving in labor day weekend?

Hi, I'm just moving into the area, very excited. I was hoping to be able to move furniture and other big stuff on Labor Day Weekend; not Labor Day itself, but Saturday, 8/30. Does anyone know if the West Indian Day festivities would make that difficult? I could also move the weekend prior if necessary.

I know they close streets and parking is impossible on the day of the actual parade, but I didn't know where I could check for street closures and so forth for the rest of the weekend. I'm on St Marks between Franklin and Bedford if that helps.

Thanks!

  • You shouldn't particularly run into any extra trouble moving stuff on St. Mark's between Franklin and Bedford on the Saturday before Labor Day. Welcome to the neighborhood and stuff. :D
  • This is going to be my first Labor Day here in the neighborhood as well, and I also live on St Marks (but btwn Rogers & Nostrand). I have been told by MANY that movement in this area (back to Atlantic) will be impossible. This is what I've been told-I'm planning on being out of the area for the weekend (can't take the crowds/noise), so I really wish you luck moving in.
BTW, I am West Indian & boy, can my peeps be loud!! :)
  • Subject: Welcome to the block

    Hi,

My fiance and I moved here just a month and a half ago, so welcome! We're on St. Marks between Franklin and Bedford, as well. If you have questions about the neighborhood, please feel free to PM me... I'd love to try and help with the limited info I have so far.

Don't know much about labor day but the street tends to get super-packed with cars when there are events, even double-parked so I imagine it will be crowded. We'll be around so if there's anything we can do to help ease the difficulty with all the extra activity, let me know. It can be tough to be new in a neighborhood without a lot of familiarity.

    Jenn
  • Awesome, thanks for the advice and welcomes. Hopefully Saturday will not be too difficult.

I'm not sure exactly where it will be, it was St Johns last year. The NYC.gov website show it as "St. Johns Place to Brooklyn Museum" for this year.
  • Welcome! I'm a St. Marksian as well, although I live a little further east than you will. You shouldn't have trouble with driving and parking on Saturday, and you couldn't pick a better time to get to know your neighbors. Also, your block of St. Marks is particularly wide, which makes it easy for double parked unloading. When you've lugged that last piece of furniture up the steps and you're all hot and sweaty, grab a beer, find the stoop and you'll find plenty of people to say hello to.
