Summer Streets - BK Bridge to Central Park, sans cars
First "Summer Street" event is this Saturday
When: 7am - 1pm, Saturday Aug 9 (as well as 8/16, 8/23)
What: Traffic free route from Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park (street closures are Lafayette leading to 4th ave leading to Park Ave up to 72th street park entrance).
Route map here:
http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/summerstreets/html/route/route.shtml
I know we don't usually get started until 1pm, so it might be a little early for the group....but anyone interested in a ride?
There's also some entertainment along the way.

That is SO cool. Wish it were Prospect Park to Central Park, but cool...

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing...a park-to-park link would be great.
How about this for a potential ride:
-Take the Summer Street route up to Central Park
-Ride the Central Park loop, exiting at the Northeast corner of the park
-Cut east to the greenway along the FDR, taking it to the Triboro Bridge
-Cross bridge to Astoria, stop for lunch and/or a beer at the Beer Garden
-Ride back through LIC-->Greenpoint-->W'burg--->home.
Possible second stop at the new(ish) Radegast beer garden in Williamburg. Could finish up at Franklin Park, if we want to keep the beer garden theme going.
I have to calculate the exact mileage, but at first glance it looked like 25-30 miles, much of it in bike lane territory. -
I'd be up for doing this some time, though this saturday won't work at all (three different friends decided to plan a wedding and two parties on friday/saturday, the bastards!).
My gf & I have plans to do the ride from Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park the following week, I think. -
I ended up deciding to go at the last minute. Left my place around 12:30 to catch the last half hour of traffic free streets. Got to 52nd street or so before the streets were reopened (a couple minutes before 1pm, actually).
Got to the park, did 3/4 lap, exiting at 79th street on west side then jumped over the greenway at Riverside, rode down the west side and back to Brooklyn Bridge.
26 miles total, from Prospect Heights. Nice ride with very little car traffic (tourist traffic on the bridge is another story, ugh). Good to see so many people out on their bikes (though i did see one crash...no serious injury).
I'd be up for a repeat in the future if anyone is interested in joining. -
i walked up park avenue this afternoon.
-
it was mostly bikes though
-
I would like to do this if it ran later than 1pm
Howdy, Stranger!
