Couch/Sleeper Sofa - Furniture Store?
So I just moved and am in dire need of some furniture, in particular a sofa bed. The thing is, my stairwell is really narrow and low, it wouldn't even fit a full-size boxspring (that was quite an experience). I am trying to find a furniture place that sells sofa beds (not click-clacks) AND can actually deliver in a building like mine. I was checking out Jennifer Convertibles, but I have heard horror stories about them and while IKEA is a possibility, I am still 100% sure.
Does anyone have any recommendations about where I could look? I know there are quite a few discount furniture places but I am not sure where to even start. Any help would be appreciated by me and my sad, furniture-less apartment. Thanks!

If you're willing to pay more for a quality piece of furniture that you'll have for a long time, Carlyle makes great sofabeds and I recommend them highly. It looks like they're currently having a summer clearance sale.

On 4th Avenue between 31st an 32nd Streets there is a furniture store (Not sure of the name) that will deliver unassembled furniture and put it together in your home. Three of my friends were very satisfied with their services. Good luck!

Oh, I forgot to add. Think twice before buying an expensive piece of furniture. Always remember that it has to come out the way it went in and that can be costly!

A friend of mine got a really nice microsuede futon type thing but it looks really nice and came in a flat box with minimal assembly. He got it at one of those discount places on Flatbush or Pacific and had it delivered the same day. His door is really narrow too and it was no problem. I think it was like $300.

You can try Plaza Furniture in the city. Nice folks and a family owned business.

To the OP... Yeah steer away from Jennifer. First of all whatever the price IS... it is NOT. I live close enough to the store on 5th Ave to easily carry any couch or chair home with a little help. Well it didn't work like that... no way to pick it up from the store and a fee of over $100 for delivery.
Today I am feeling very pro-Ikea because a friend of mine and I drove over this mid day. We came prepared with lunch and wine and hung out by the water and had lunch and then did minor shopping. There was NO ONE sitting in those lounge chairs with us. The people that got off the water taxi made a bee line to the store. That area behind the store on the water is a hidden treasure. Take a free bus ride or take a walk and sit there alone and read a book if you are lucky enough not to be working during the day mon-fri.. Anyway I digress.
I was not on the hunt for a couch or any furniture but there were many choices that would be appropriate for small spaces or narrow doorways. I really think you should check Ikea out. -
A few years back I ordered a leather sofabed and matching small sofa from Jennifer on 5th Ave. Come the date they promised to deliver, and they had no idea how many more weeks or months it might be before they actually had the furniture to deliver to me.
I had to go to the city's department of consumer affairs to get Jennifer to refund my money. I would never deal with them again. -
Ikea has a few and they deliver. And they are cheap (in more ways than one)

Same thing happened to me with Jennifer Convertibles a few years back--they claimed they'd lost my order, but would gladly deliver a couch in a couple of months. I managed to get the district manager's number and I called and called, trying to get my money back, but he was really evasive, and worse, had a really horrible attitude--like he was doing me a favor by speaking with me.

Called the Better Business Bureau and was told there were many complaints about the business. After I told the district manager I'd called the BBB, he told me he'd been really patient with me--what did I expect him to do? Refund my money, as I'd asked repeatedly. DUH. (It happened within a month.)
I went with Ikea, and I've had the couch for 8 years now. It's definitely worse for wear, but it didn't cost much, and they brought it up my narrow steps and through my very narrow door.
Howdy, Stranger!
