Maple st and Kingston ave are question please.
Hello,
I am a student moving from Ga and I was wondering if you guys new anything about Maple st, mostly the 600s. I really don't know if this is a bad part or a good part but I know it's cheap and i'm thinking about moving in a studio very soon. I really don't want to be in the most terrible part of the neighborhood so if you could share your info with me. I'm looking for something in the 700-800 price range and hopefully that includes some utilites. If anyone knows anything please let me know.
Thanks a lot...
Much love and peace

Hi there, welcome!
Maple Street is a few blocks to the south, outside of Crown Heights, and the 600s of Maple Street appear to be between Kingston and Albany Avenues in an area that I believe is known as Wingate.
Wingate is the neighborhood just east of Prospect Lefferts Gardens, so you'd do well to pass through PLG to get to Prospect Park (which you simply *must* do, great park...).
I don't know the area you mention very well, but I am sure there are various others here that do, since I think I've noted in the past that someone on here lives at Kingston in that general area.
Good luck with the move, and again, welcome to these boards and Brooklyn in general!

Oh, one more thing:
You might want to edit the title of this thread to be something like the following to get more local comments from that specific area:
Maple St & Kingston Ave area question
That way your response won't be limited to people specifically thinking it was going to be about Crown Heights.
Also, if you were open to the idea of mentioning your monthly budget for a studio, people here might point you toward any aparments or other recommended areas that fit that budget, so you'd get the benefit of local residents' opinions on best bang for your buck.
Then, moving here from Ga of course, you'd have to weigh in on the ever-important subject of barbecue.
Ha.

Subject: Thanks..
Thank you,
Your very helpful. I thought that it was directly in Crown Heights. I will be sure to change the subject so that I will grab others. Haha, yeah the famous Ga bbq. Actually i'm vegan so I barely participate in that type of stuff. Not much of a Georgia girl. The place that i'm looking at is only 700 a month and that includes utilities. It's the cheapest thing that i've found without it being a scam. But i'm open if someone has anything that they think will be better.

I don't know anything about that area but after living in NYC for years I can tell you that when you see an apartment listed for THAT cheap, there's usually a good reason for it (that reason usually being that it's in one of the worst/scariest/most inaccessible areas). Not to be a tool or anything but just remember that this is still BROOKLYN. You're still in NEW YORK CITY, so be careful. I would check it out first and probably walk around the 'hood at night to get a good feel for the area.
Good luck. -
I know people who own houses on Maple and for the most part they love it (been there for 20 yrs.) although it is a bit of an island. The odd thing about NYC neighborhoods is that you have to judge them almost block by block.
I just googled the 600 block. My friends live in the 100s and 200s. To be honest, I wouldn't live there. It might be incredible but personally I would definitely take a very close look first. -
That is a terrible block in a terrible neighborhood.
-
I would not recommend it. There are good number of shootings and robberies in that area.

The block is very close to Kings County Hospital and is so-so: not horrible, but not the best, either. The biggest drawback, though, is its distance from public transportation - you'd be a 10-15 minute walk from the nearest subway stop (though there are bus lines). Not the best setup, especially if you want to go out in Manhattan, Williamsburg, or other areas of gentrified Brooklyn.

I lived one block from that area. It is mostly small crumbling homes, 60 year old 6 story condos, and new two story attached homes. Most people are either Orthodox jews, African American, or Caribbean. The only half decent supermarket is the jewish one on e new york and kingston or associated on e new york and utica. There is no decent restaurant or take out in the area. It is a 40-50 minute walk to prospect park and 15 min walk to the 2 train on sterling st. There is no sense of community due to the many fights between the Jews and African Americans. It was a very tough place to live for me. A lot of cars blasting loud music, motorcycle racing, people begging for money on street corners, etc. If you are not from the area or are part of a group that is from the area it is difficult to feel like you belong.

okay, so far reading this forum i have not heard one word about my neighborhood, wingate, up until now. don't knock this area. just because it is deeper into crown heights, brooklyn, or whatever, doesn't mean it is necessarily a bad place to live. we have only been here less than a year, but we have never had a problem. me and a number of my friends live two blocks up from the mentioned crossroad, kingston and maple. we live on lefferts. we have a great apartment, cheap rent, and we are only a bike ride away from everything we need. i have never been hollered at by anyone, and i have never felt unsafe. i never hear "gun shots" or "fireworks" and i have never seen a robbery. i have walked home, drunk, through the neighborhood with no problem (not proud of it). the worse shit i get for being queer is stares. my roommate used to live in bed-stuy, and the car alarms and music, etc, were much worse than here. but it is still noisy. there are still folks up at 3 am yelling about something. hell, i am one of them sometimes. there are certain neighborhoods for certain types of people. i honestly don't think a kid from georgia will have a problem here, though. -
I don't live that far from Maple and Kingston, and it is not a bad area. It may not be the ultimate best but it is far from being a bad area. Most people living in the area are long time residents and it is not the easiest area to get a sense of community but that has more to do with most people associating with people they grew up with. I have lived in my apartment for over 13 years, am African American and still don't know the majority of people in my building because there has never been a reason for me to. Don't mistake me though as I think it is a normal sense of community that I share with the people that I live around it is just not the knock on the door, have tea and crumpets type of neighborhood.
But back to Maple....it is near Kings County Hospital so you have that aspect to deal with and it can be loud but all in all, nothing too extreme. You have several grocery stores in the area if you don't mind walking a little bit. There is a Kosher Supermarket on Empire and Brooklyn, the Crown Heights International Supermarket on East New York Avenue between Schenectady and Troy, the Associated or C-Town (I don't shop there so I can't remember the name) on Nostrand and Montgomery and Western Beef further up on Empire. There are a couple of 24 hour laundromats in the area. The biggest drawback too me, is the accessibility to the train. The closet stop is the Sterling stop on the 2 or 5 train but you can always catch the B12 towards Parkside and catch the Q train from there, or walk over to Empire and catch the B43 to either the Prospect Avenue stop on the Q train or the Kingston Avenue stop on the 3 train. If you are into Kosher food, you can always walk down Kingston Avenue and go to the Jewish shops on that strip. There is also a Family Dollar store on Kingston and East New York (I think) where you can pick up some discount stuff.
All in all, it is probably not that expensive due to the location not having basic amenities close by and not because it is a bad area. -
My girlfriend and I live literally 2 blocks from here... We love the neighborhood, rent is affordable, for now, and everybody is really cool to us.. You'll definitely run into the three coolest guys outside the laundramat at anytime of day who are always happy to say "What's up?" and have a cool little conversation with you.. Los Amigos bodega further up on Kingston is great! Luis, its owner, has been really welcoming to us.. One thing you'll also want to keep in mind is that our neighborhood is rapidly changing.. In the five months that we've been in our already renovated unit, doctors, tattoo artists, teachers and a much younger crowd have started to filter into our building.. New construction is happening daily, and I feel nothing but safe in our area... To the other locals on the board, let's get in touch! We love meeting new people, especially in our own area!!!
