5th Union? — Brooklynian

5th Union?

Anyone know what's going in on the corner of 5th & Union, right next to Beso? I can't remember what was there before, but I passed by last week and the store has been gutted. Looks like something new is coming in soon.

  • it's a store called "something else", one of which is open on smith street. it's clothing. for some reason i thought it would be a discount store, but i should have known better at that address.
  • yes it's gonna be a jeans store...note the jeans spinning on turntables at Brooklyn Industries across the street....

    the not terribly interesting history....
It was a perfectly good non-chain superlocal video store ten years ago, then a super lame understocked corner store. Then it was empty for a year.
  • That's not very exciting.

Talk about hip... I can't wait to get my hipness on! Hopefully they'll let me take a picture next to the hip scooter they'll put in the window. [/sarcasm]
  • Fill in the blank

    "I wish 5th & Union was a . . . instead of Something Else"

    a bookstore? hardware?
    vietnamese sandwich shop?
    gay bar?
    greengrocer?
    gun purveyor?

    or how about
    The Gap?
  • the owners of Floyd (of the indoor bocce court) on Atlantic Ave at Henry are opening their second location there.

on Union, across from Uncle Louie G.

should be themed similarly, with a kitchen-confirmed, and rumoured to have TWO indoor bocce courts planned, and a more concerted attempt at being a soccer-friendly bar.
  • Really? That would be great! Been looking for a soccer themed bar in the Slope. Not familiar with where exactly it would be though, any idea as to the address?

Hopefully in time for this summer's World Cup!

    you can't miss it.
large-ish, white, brick building on the south side of the street.
i think the work has got a bit to go, though i haven't been down that way in about a month, the world cup is not out of the question.

my bet is if not, Floyd will be showing it.
at least one of the owners is a huge supporter, i get the impression he'd like floyd to be a "soccer" bar, it almost is if you're there early on a saturday or sunday morning.

i really liket place, except when it gets over-run by either the cobble hill stroller brigade or a pestilence of brooklyn law types.
  • I actually contacted them via e-mail, and they said it would be ready in January sometime.

I walked by it, and it does have a bit of a ways to go to look even REMOTELY decent, but hey, with enough labor, things can move rather fast.
  • That's fantastic!

I've also been looking for a nice bar that can be relied upon to show soccer -- glad to hear it's coming!

    this was me.
they are still claiming a February opening, it still looks a little further off to me.

as has been mentioned in the other thread, Black Sheep is open and is also a soccer-friendly bar.
