Putnam and Nostrand to live — Brooklynian

Putnam and Nostrand to live

Hello, I'm in NYC apartment hunting, planning to relocated in the next few days. I found a nice apartment on Putnam street very close to Nostrand. How is this area? The building looks safe but the neighborhood someone sketchy because of an abandoned building on the block and some signs of blight. Am I being paranoid, or is the area somewhere to avoid? Thanks so much for any information that you can provide me

  • Boy, that's so hard to answer, we've lived on the corner of Putnam and Irving for almost ten years. We're very comfortable there in spite of the bi-annual shootings in front of Putnam and Grand. I think we feel safe because our neighbors look out for one another and generally everyone is really friendly. We've had some crime, our neighbors house was broken into and our car was broken into, our daughter was assaulted by a teen gang that punched her in the back of the head and ran away, she broke her glasses and was shaken up but not seriously hurt. I'm not wild about the assault but I've lived in NY all my life and that amount of background crime seems part of the tradeoff of living in a place where I can hop on a bus and see world class opera in a couple of stops. Honestly, I don't know how much safer a neighborhood like brooklyn heights or park slope is, or so I tell myself. All in all I really like my house, the roses, the backyard, my neighbors and Kush or course. I'd be really sad to move to a safer neighborhood in suburbia. Whew, more than you wanted to know I bet. Good luck!

I would go on the block at night and see how you feel. Deserted and scary? Or Parents walking kids home? Rowdy teens on there own? You make the call. I've lived near abandoned buildings, too. A lot has to do I think with foreclosure but Bed-Stuy is still recovering from the late 70s.

If you Trini, you will feel right at home on Putnam esp if between Nostrand and Marcy. The entire block is one huge extended Trini family spread thru several buildings. The block between Beford and Nostrand is fine too. Trinis all over this little area. I have walked to and from there at all hours of the night and nothing ever happened to me. I a girl too. Also if you like jazz there is very nice Caribbean jazz on Sundays at Liquid Love Putnam and Bedford. Several doubles and roti shops a few blocks away. Good area for West Indian people.
