Best way to drive to newark airport?

I've always taken the Brooklyn Bridge to Chambers Street in Manhattan, then Hudson St. (8th Ave) uptown to the Holland Tunnel, then Routes 1 and 9 to the airport.
If you're not traveling at rush hour, it's usually pretty quick. -
Funny that my first post on this board would be driving directions but...
Through the city at that time on a Sunday really is your best bet. I live in Carroll Gardens, and the route I always take is:
Brooklyn Bridge to Hudson; north to Holland Tunnel. From there you can take either the turnpike or 1/9 to Newark. At that time of day on a Sunday it shouldn't take more than 30 minutes. Sometimes there's backup trying to get out of the city in the morning, but at that time of day you should be golden. -
I also have to take this same trip on labor day at around 1pm- any advice on the traffic then? Both of these are round trips (I'm dropping off then picking up my boyfriend so I have to drive out and back both times.) I imagine both those days shouldnt be so bad, people wouldn't be coming back from labor day that early i would imagine...right?
-
Yep - that's right. Holidays are the best time to drive in the city. No one is around. That route typically works great anytime on the weekend and on holidays. On Labor Day, coming back into the city traffic won't start to back up until around 5 or 6pm.
-
going there is not so bad. But next weekend I would recommend he take the bus from the airport to Bryant park and get the subway from there!
-
take 1 and 9 ,.....better than turnpike and no toll.i go bklyn bridge to chambers to hudson into holland tunnel to 1 and 9 via pulaski skyway
-
Sweet, all this is so helpful. I was going to throw his ass on the jersey train out of Penn but he's got such huge luggage that I felt guilty...although if someone had said Laborday was going to be hell he was just going to have to deal with it
-
No, not the train. The trian is annoying as shit. The bus is easy as hell. Hee hee. The bus is just one leg, luggage underneath, pretty cheap like $13.

I would agree with that, especially with luggage. There are craploads of cheap buses at Port Authority, 42nd & 8th. I think I payed $11 last time I used one. It might have been $14. And A/C/E go right there. -
I have to go to Newark today at 3:30....I was thinking of going thru Staten Island....any thoughts?

There is going to be a fuckload of traffic most likely, any way you go at 3:30pm on a Friday. Sorry. -
Yeah, I know, and it'll probably be worse coming back.
The q is, do I go through SI or the city? -
Hire a helicopter!
-
Flip a coin. I would probably take SI out, and Manhattan back. Which is more expensive tollwise, but possibly marginally cheaper timewise. If you take SI be sure to wave to me, 'cause I'll be sitting in traffic there.
-
After careful consideration and listening to everyone's input, I've decided to attach my Sheepzooka (patent pending) to the roof of my car and just blast my way through traffic. I imagine I'll also get a police escort, which will make it that much more fun.
-
Staten Island will cost you $10, plus the $8 getting back into the city. If you go thru the city... weekends can suck if they close off one of the streets yer gonna use. BTW, you cannot get to Hudson from Chambers right now... you have to take the detour route... Church St (which is the street you have to turn on, for the detour) following the detour, or I take it up to Canal or Watts St after Church turns into 6th ave (just follow the road to the left when it splits). Voila, yer in Jersey. Take 1 & 9. Get gas on the way back, pay the $8 toll into the city... I recommend Staten Island for less stop and go (usually), but eh, whichever.

There is construction at Cambers and Hudson you need to take Reade which is the 1st left after chambers wehn you cross the BB

West Indian Parade on Labor Day.
-
You people who said it would take 30 minutes each way are crazy- I just made the round-trip and it took almost 3.5 HOURS (and I didn't get lost!) I waited for almost an hour to get into one of the two cash lanes for the tunnel back into the city, and my boyfriend nearly missed his flight while we were waiting to make it through to NJ! He's taking a train next week when he comes back!
-
Sorry, you had such a tough time Carmen. But here are some tips from an old local:
IF you must take the Bridge - as noted above you make the left on Reade. Then, also as noted above, make the right on Church and left on Canal. And yeah, out of the tunnel to the Pulaski Skyway (1/9 South).
However, what you should ALWAYS do is take the Battery Tunnel to get to Central Jersey from Bklyn. Right on West St., right on Canal.
AND you should have an EZ Pass. Right?
Also - somehow the city has gotten popular again in the past decade and astoundingly so over the last couple years. The EV is swarming with kids and tourists, etc. It's only worse in the summer, even in late August. But one thing you can count on is people coming and going to/from The Shore, Ikea, their vacation, the airport.
Friday night at an early ending (11pm) event on 2nd Ave @7th st found us cursing the MySpace/AIM (and whatever else) generation. But, oddly enough we left it all behind at Houston and found tons of parking (and an instant table) in Chinatown. Weird.
I make regular trips from Kensington to Orange County, usually Battery Tunnel to West Side Hwy to GWB etc and yesterday got a later start than usual. The West Side was crammed with "boat" people etc. Returning tonight I had to avoid the GWB entirely and do the Tappan Zee, Triboro, BQE route just to get home via stops in Bay Ridge. It was rough all the way.
Welcome to summer in the city! And yeah, get an EZPass -
why would I have an EZ pass? I've gone to jersey 4 times since I moved here 2.5 years ago. I don't know if that warrants an EZ pass.
I should have taken the battery tunnel, the holland was a fucking nightmare to get through and coming home was just unbelievable. 2 cash lanes coming back into the city?! thats a fucking joke.
I know traffic is bad when my nearly new car's clutch starts to malfunction due to overheating- I was actually worried that it wouldn't engage today around hour 3 of stop and go traffic. Yeah I know having a stick in the city=stupid, but the car was paid for when I moved here and it's not been enough of an issue to sell it..
he's TOTALLY taking the train home next week. No way in hell im doing that again unless it's a one way, park-the-car sort of trip. -
and i'd like to note that I really am just venting because the trp was hell- I really do appreciate everyone's advice on the route to take!! I'm just complaining bc traffic (and jersey) wear my patience...
-
You never pay tolls? Um, okay, the EZPass was just a suggestion. And it only "costs" the amount of the deposit. You complained about the ridiculous wait on line at the Holland, and well, I guess I'll wave from the EZPass lane (at the Battery..in DC...up 95...).
I'm 44. I've been driving (and driving in the city) 27 years. I've lived in Brooklyn 21 years (we left Crown Heights for LI when I was 5). I've owned basically four cars and only one was an automatic. That doesn't feel like driving to me.
Anyway, no "new" clutch should have a problem in three hours of stop and go traffic. You got something else going on there. -
lets fight about it.
-
I've had clutches heat up faster than that depending on the driving style and hillage going on. FWIW. It isn't a function of newness.
And I dig on EZ-Pass, but then I use it every time I drive the car pretty much. If it isn't far enough to EZ-Pass, then I'm on the subway.
Usually. :queen:
And I hate driving. Going to Newark sucks. Going to anywhere sucks. I'd rather stay in bed, pull the covers over my head. -

Exactly on both counts- I get super nervous when my clutch starts to get spongy. Its never gone out on me (and I assume it wouldn't for something like that) but its nerve wracking anyway, especially when you're already fighting in traffic. Driving a stick is fun but sometimes not worth the energy haha.

If I drove more often I would get an EZ pass, but as it is I rarely, if ever, leave the 5 boroughs. We've taken one trip outside of NY so far aside from this one newark "adventure." Plus, regardless of who "should" have one, having one cash lane still seems redic to me... -
"If I drove more often I would get an EZ pass, but as it is I rarely, if ever, leave the 5 boroughs."
Then why do you even own a car? I'm sure I'm wrong about that logic as well. -
noisejoke wrote: "If I drove more often I would get an EZ pass, but as it is I rarely, if ever, leave the 5 boroughs."
Because I don't plan on living here forever and the car was fully paid off when I moved here. I don't need the money I would make selling it, and it's in good mechanical (and mostly body) shape- it only costs me insurance which is low and when I move I won't have to deal with buying a new one. Plus we do use it- my boyfriend golfs twice a week so he uses it then, and we use it to run errands like home depot, big grocery trips, ikea (the new one.) He's also in a band so we use it to haul his amps/cabinets and whatnot, and his art supplies.
Then why do you even own a car? I'm sure I'm wrong about that logic as well. -
OK. So why are you giving me crap for a suggestion that will save you lots of time - yes, within the 5 boros - and a little bit of money.
We have lots of people, and little space around NY. You might have to put some thought and strategy into your driving. You might consider times OTHER than the middle of a summer Sunday to go to an airport. You might consider using closer airports that require no river crossings.
I've been driving amps, dogs, kids etc around here a long time. I might actually know something. I'm afraid to know how your boyfriend gets to a golf course or driving range. -
The internet is serious business.
