nycares.org and other volunteering

Does anyone here participate in any of the nycares.org volunteering opportunities? Or anything outside of nycares? I used to volunteer a whole lot before moving to the city and kind of fell out of it when I got here, now I'm trying to find a few places and there are so many options its hard to get a good feel for whats legit and whats not. Any suggestions? I'd prefer to do something NOT animal related (I spent all of highschool/most of college working in animal shelters and rescues and am a bit burnt out on poop scooping.)

I'd LOVE to find something to do in the park slope area, if anyone knows of anything! I've been trying to get in at the superhero supply store but their orientations always fall on days that i'm unavailable, plus it seems like most of their avail shifts are midday. Its too bad, I live right around the corner!

  • I've done a lot with NYCares, it is a pretty easy and flexible way to get into things you like and try out different opportunities. When you find something you like within their framework, you can often shift outside their org and do it directly, if you want. Some of the more popular things fill up fast, so it pays to stay on top of the day they release the list for the next month if there are popular things you want. Team leaders can pre-sign you up for stuff before it gets released too, so you can always talk to them or email them and have them put you on ahead of time if you are grooving on a particular project.
  • And, if you don't like what's currently available through NYCares, or the events you want are filling up too fast, you can always sign up to be a Team Leader yourself! Open positions for established events are listed on their website, plus you can always try to start a brand new event.

Yah, some of my favorite projects have basically been put on by special people who randomly started helping someone, and then it grew and they listed it as an event with themselves as the leader to get more manpower. Or womanpower. Whatever. Why is manpower a word and womanpower not? Let's go with peoplepower, then. Volunteers.

I hope you can work this out because I just looooove this place. My son just started going to some of their classes and they are such a great bunch of people and a wonderful organization.

I think they do things inside the public schools so once school starts they may have something earlier for you.
