Bergen, Between Kingston and Albany — Brooklynian

Bergen, Between Kingston and Albany

Hi everyone I am moving to the neighborhood in the next few weeks, on Bergen in an apartment between Kingston and Albany, if any one could tell me information about the area that would be great. Such as if I am walking home late at night along, which metro stop should I use, Kingston or Nostrand, or does it not matter? Any other information would also be greatly appreciated. thanks!

  • For the A train, it would be best to use the Kingston-Throop stop. Albany Houses are in that area but I don't think you will have a problem with that since you will not pass it unless you are actually on Albany Avenue and even then, I have never had a problem walking pass them. I have been on that block before and it is not the best one in the area so I would just be aware of my surroundings. Other than that, if for some reason you want to get off at Nostrand, you can always walk from there or catch the B65(?) which runs down Dean Street if you are going in that direction.

BTW - I think where you are going to live at is part of or near the historic Weeksville section.
  • the Kingston stops on the C and the 3 are closest, since you are between Kingston and Albany. You'll be just behind me; I'm on St. Marks. I generally feel pretty safe, but I do recommend keeping your eyes open and getting to know your neighbors. The store owners and vendors along Kingston are all pretty friendly, so it shouldn't take you long to feel like you know people to say hello to as you walk to the train. The only really sketchy thing near you is the bodega on the corner of Bergen and Kingston. It's okay during the day, but it really attracts creepy guys after dark. There's a nicer one a little further up Kingston closer to St. Marks.
    Welcome to the neighborhood!
  • I don't mean to scare you, but just keep in mind that generally the further southeast you go, the worse the area gets. To me, once you pass Albany Ave the area gets progressively more dangerous. I would also advise that if possible try to avoid passing Albany Houses, a notorious crime invested housing development. Some of the recent incidents that I know of are the following:

The poor nine year old child who was shot three weeks ago on Pacific between Troy and Schenectady; (Incidently, another person was shot on Schenectady earlier that day)

  • There was also another shooting on 5/19 in which the victim was seriously injured. This incident occured on St. Marks and Albany (Albany Houses).
  • Speak of the devil:

    Shooting | 242 Schenectady Ave X Sterling Pl Brooklyn, NY | 8/29/2008 5:27 p.m.
  • There's basically no reason to venture in the direction of where all these incidents happened unless you have some specific reason to be there.

I think the immediate area that the OP mentions is not at all the same as the area past Albany, in fact I think that there is a huge difference. Further, when you go west of that area it is very nice, this is the recently landmarked Crown Heights North area.
