Busted window on Subaru wagon-7th Avenue b/w 11th 12th
Just walking down the east side of 7th Avenue and saw a late model Subaru wagon with its passenger window shattered. First two digits of license plate is "DX" . It would probably need to be moved in the morning anyway, but thought if the owner saw this, he/she could go check it out so it didn't remain open all night.
Anyone know any good window replacement places open 24/7?

You're kind for posting this! it's not my car, but I'm sure the owner will be appreciative if he or she sees this

I was just walking on 8th Ave. and saw window glass on the sidewalk where another car must have gotten broken into last night. This was between 11th and 10th.
-
There is broken glass on 9th street a few feet up from Smiling Pizza.
-
I have seen broken window on the street/sidewalk 4-5/week all summer - always a sign of a shitty economy
-
Nah, just a sign of an auto glass shop trying to drum up business.
-
I did think of that old "Far Side" cartoon that shows a guy standing in front of a broken window and he's got a brick that had a note wrapped around it that says "Brick thrown through your window? Call Al's Glass."
But I saw another one last week on 14th St & PPW so there seem to be a lot more of these break-ins. Not sure if they are stealing something in particular or just breaking the glass for the heck of it. Airbags had not been stolen from the Subaru I saw. -
Saw another one this morning, a Jetta with Mass plates on 14th just east of 7th Avenue. Nothing taken that I could see.

For the record (and I've posted this before, but just to add) someone has been tying to break into my car for months now. They've been apparently trying to slim jim it both through the door itself and down through the window (the molding is torn and keeps getting worse and the inside jam of the door is all scratched up and also keeps getting worse.) I would bet that it's about 2 or 3 times a month that someone tries to steal it. They're clearly looking to joyride as (knock on wood) the windows are untouched. There's nothing nice in the car anyway and the car itself isn't even that nice, I don't know why someone keeps trying to take it. I'm assuming its the same incompetent thieves because its really not THAT hard to slimjim a door and they've been trying for a while.
I always park around 7th ave on 15th or 16th streets. -
It's amazing how many piles of shattered glass I ride past on my bicycle travels. This summer is much worse than months past and definitely points to economic conditions.
Thanks to all the glass piles which then scatter all over the streets, I have also a few extra flat tires as well. If I have to chose between avoiding glass or avoiding getting kicked in the ass by a car, I get the glass every time. -
What the heck does broken car windows have to do with the economy? Gee, I lost my job, let me go steal a car.

No, they're stealing things like portable GPS systems. Saw it on my block too a few weeks ago, with a missing Garmin (or similar - the holder was still there, along with wires, but no system). Out of state SUV, it happened around 7pm too. I called 911 to report it since I knew it had happened in a 15 minute space, between when I got home and went out to go to dinner.
Lots of desperate people who will break into cars to steal electronics and make a buck or two. -
^Why would you leave that in your car?! There's nothing in my car anyway, but if there was I would put it in the glovebox at least! The only thing in my car is a bag of empty water bottles...
-
I don't know why people would leave them - in plain sight - in their cars, but many do... this car in question was out-of-state, so they probably didn't realize how stupid they were being, but I do know that one of my NYC-born and bred neighbors had the same thing happen to them a few months ago (window broke, Garmin stolen).
I don't leave anything in my car either. -
Mother in law was hit last night on 5th St./7th Ave. Left the stupid GPS suction thinger on the windshield. Unit was in the trunk though. Theives got some change and some wintergreen Velemints. Cop said it was the 9th break in the responded to since the weekend.

Oh, the joys of not owning a car!

It's fairly well-documented - especially during the summer months - these quotes are from auto glass repair employees in Dallas - Google and you will find hundreds of references to bad economy and broken car glass.

"When school ends, it happens a lot. And this year even more," he said, speculating that youth may have more free time due to a shortage of summer jobs."
"One factor that always adds to the vandalism is when the economy gets bad like this," he said. "Kids do a little more."
As true in NYC as in Dallas. -
Just got back from a run and saw Mercedes wagon on PPW between 1st and 2nd with the drivers window completely gone. There really is a noticeable upswing in this kind of activity.
Howdy, Stranger!
