We've officially been priced out :( Going away party?
Subject: We've officially been priced out
Going away party?
And we found a place in Bushwick for $200 less a month than what we're paying now. With more space, too.
I will miss you guys!!!!!!!!!!! Who knows? We may be back a few years from now.
But before I go--anyone for a going away party? I would most likely have it at Buttermilk on a Friday when Jill is bartending. I should get a cake that says something like:
"4th ave--huge fucking rip-off"
"Eat the cake, choke on the hype."

Awwww....I am SO going to miss you! At least we have happy hour....

Very down for a partay. -
Bushwick is only a short (folding) bike ride away!
-
Oh no!
When are you leaving? So sad.
-
if anyone is looking for an awesome deal in the slope near GAP pm me for details. We're breaking our lease for different features and our massive place is going for cheap. 1bed ,1 bath, massive kitchen/living area. (the person who shows the place is computer illiterate and rarely gets stuff online)
-
We're moving October 1st or a few days before.
We started at $1600 in that place, been there two years, and it was going to go up to $1900 if we stayed. Even that was too much, but guess what---
He listed it at $2300 and someone already took it!!! WTF?? Come on, a large 1br on 4th ave and 15th? Sheesh. -
Totally not surprised. That area is really building up. Sorry to see you go!
-
Damn, and I didn't even get to hang out with you because I have no bike
:x
will you come to this friday's bar crawl?? -

Aww, thanks. Well, at least I'm not too far from Prospect Heights (on a bike). -

I'll be at Commonwealth for another event, so I'll see you guys when you get there.

Subject: I feel you
I am very close to where you live, and I totally feel you. It has been such a change around the area, and I cannot believe how expensive it gets. Good luck! -
$2300?? yeesh! I was at $1850 for a three bed on 4th at 21st. Then they wanted $2300 after one year (this was last fall), we told em smell ya later. They listed it for that much and I sat and watched week after week the price drop another fifty or a hundred bucks til finally it went for $1950. And I laughed.
-
I know. He is also renovating the top floor and was only going to ask for $1700. Then, the people next door managed to find some genius to pay $2300 for their top floor. And thus, it began.
His reasoning is that the Vue apartments that are being rented (some are apparently) are going for $2800 for a 2br.
There are suckers afoot these days.
Oh, did I mention that my apartment doesn't have any closets? -
No kiddin, there be suckas a-plenty. What kind of building is yours vs. the Vue apartments? I always felt that was my landlord on 4th Ave tried to jack ours so much because of the new development that went up across the street. Cause ya know, thats the same as the filthy ass hallwayed 3 unit building with poor heating and a kitchen the size of an airplane bathroom. Or he just knew we couldn't swing that rent and wanted our punk asses out (it musta sucked having the rent paid to you before the first of the month!). I will stop myself before I get on a tangent...

Wait about 12 months as the financial sector continues to tank and it ripples throughout the local economy there will be some breathing room. The weakness in the financial sector is only getting worse. NY is always the last to feel a downturn and last to recover.
Manhattan rents fell in June, albiet nominally. Without a doubt less prime NY areas will take a steeper dive. I am actually looking forward to my lease expiring next year because I signed at the tail end of the bubble and have no doubt I can get a better deal. -
I'll be priced out of my PH apartment/building as of our current lease's end on 1/31/09. We began at $2K/month on a 2 year lease, but didn't mind as it's a seriously awesome, huge apartment in a doorman elevator building. Our lease was then renewed for 1 year at $2,200. I suspect that a new lease will run at least $2,300-2,400, which is officially insane. Adding to that, our daughter will be 10 months old then, and I need her out of my bedroom! Given that a 2BR in this building's currently listed for $3,700/mo  , my little family's being kicked to the curb.
We currently have no idea what we're going to do for housing. If one more family member tells us to buy something, I'm gonna scream. (Why does anyone think that a librarian and an editor have the type of income to buy something around here? Maintenance/association fees on condos and coops are stupid high and involve insane amounts of cash down, and we can't afford to buy a house anywhere between here and East New York. The suburbs? Either the commute's way the hell too long, the taxes on real estate are astronomical, the town sucks worse than a Hoover factory, the school system is horrible, or some combination thereof. Who me? Bitter? Naaaaah...)
Sheesh. I shoulda made my rant a whole separate post. -
I feel your pain, megs. I feel your pain.

Subject: $2300?! For one bedroom in Gowanus neighborhood?
I cannnot believe somebody really would pay $2300 for one bedroom on 3rd av-4th av!! That is rediculous. They must be either having a LOT of money or they're just fools.
My lease is out next year too, I am wondering what is going to happen. I live one bedroom , and I heard from the neighbor in the same building that their rent is up for $200/month for this year. I am moving out (or you can say being priced out) when it goes higher than $2000. I would rather move somewhere cheeper and try to save money to buy something someday, rather than pouring money that amount of money for very old, no-maintenance apartment...and the block street is disgusting with garbages. -
Oi! That sucks! Sorry to hear that.
Makes me wonder what will happen when my lease is up (after that little episode on Saturday you never know :-(
Then again, my place is stabilized, can they kick me out at all? Need to brush up on those laws again. -
Well, POOP, sorry to hear! Glad to hear you two found another place, bigger & cheaper!
We're just about to renew our lease. Fortunately for us, the people who own this place are incredibly awesome in every way, and try to keep all their apartments in line with rent stabilized increases, despite having no law or anything else requiring them to do so.
So our rent is going up, but "only" 6%...which still amounts to quite a bit considering how much we're paying for this place, but it's still a sweet deal considering the location, space, and perks, etc. Next year, though, I'm pretty sure I won't be able to say the same, and we definitely won't be able to afford another 6% increase.
Hope you still come around for some rides & hanging out! -
Thanks everyone, for the sympathy.
And I see that I'm not the only one going through this--I feel for all of you too!
The new apartment is great and the landlady is very nice. The area is still a bit sketchy. I feel alright on my bike, but the walk from the train is well--it reminds me of walking around Washington Ave/Franklin Ave 6 years ago. Of course, considering how different that area is now, I think there's hope.
Hell, if any of you guys who are getting priced out want to join me my landlady has a 1br for $1200 one block from the Halsey J stop.
We can all go to Goodbye Blue Monday for drinks together!
Oh, and don't worry, I'll still come to stuff. Franklin Park is only 15 minutes by bike! -
Oh no! Such a shame. But I hope you won't mind getting too familiar with the route between your new place and Park Slope/Prospect Hgts on your bike!
-

Not to worry! I've already ridden back and forth between the two about 8-10 times. Its about 30 minutes to south slope.

That place is great! -
So, when are said drinks with the redhaired folding bike woman know as Ca? ...count me in.

I talked to Jill at Buttermilk about it, and she's down. So it will probably be September 19th or 26th (both are Fridays).
Is 11pm too late to start? Do you guys think starting earlier, like 9 or 10pm is better? -
