beacons closet

edited November -1 in Park Slope
so i downloaded trulia on my iphone yesterday and this morning happened to take a look at the rentals and saw that the beacons closet space is for rent beginning november 15 for $8500 per month.

PLEASE tell me beacons closet isn't closing. it is my absolute favorite store in park slope and i buy nearly all my clothes there. and it's ALWAYS packed.

i'm hoping they are just moving to a larger space, but fear the worst.

does anyone know anything about this?

please help me save beacons if you love it like i do!!!

  • I love it too. Crap. Maybe they're just moving? Does anyone on here know anyone in the know there?
  • it seems like it should be a sad day to have the local store close up shop, but i've never set foot in there, so personally i'm not all that worked up over it. i heard it was uper expensive and i don't buy a lot of clothes. If i do, i buy them at other stores.

sorry to those who loved the place. guess you should have shopped there more often.
  • i go there every week at least once. probably spend a couple hundred dollars there every month.

i just found a vintage christian dior sweater vest there last week...18 bucks. that's not expensive to me. you can't even get something at h&m for that price. and it's in PERFECT condition and is a gorgeous piece of clothing. i also found a prada long sleeve dress shirt (never worn) there about 3 weeks ago. i think it was 24 bucks. you just have to hunt.

anyway, of course i realize not everyone is into vintage shopping, but that store is always packed like crazy. you can hardly move in there. and as for the expensive thing, i'd rather find quality used items (sometimes designer) than spend money on clothes by the gap, banana, h&m, etc.

not only are those stores not my style, but the clothes are not in any way unique nor are they very good quality typically. i've oftentimes bought stuff at those stores to only wear it once or twice and then have it start falling apart.

i just called to find out the story, and apparently they are looking for a larger space in park slope. she said they not leaving the neighborhood and are doing very well. i'm still nervous though.
  • Being in my early 40s, I am too old to shop there. It would still be sad to see it go. Maybe someone should call them up and ask if they are moving or closing?

It's not expensive at all. I found a great vintage shirt there that's currently my favorite for $6. I also bought my second favorite there for $11.

It's almost always so obnoxiously packed that you can't move. If there's any reason I don't shop there more often, that is it.

Maybe they're just moving to a bigger space? It's not like there aren't a dozen for rent all up and down 5th & 7th.

    I e-mailed them.
  • it's not closing. they're moving to a bigger store down the street. but i want to know about this trulia thing--it tells you of new rentals on the market? i don't have an iphone, but i'd like to get that info...
  • They wrote me back & said same as above:
"Beacon's Closet Park Slope is moving to a larger space on 5th Avenue. Fear not. The move will happen around November. Nothing else about the store is changing.
    Love, Beacon's"

Their crowding is pretty nuts - it's a major reason why I tend to enter and exit so quickly most times I end up there. Also, I never tend to find anything in my size that looks good on me. :(
  • For those fashion challenged among us, Beacon's is a great stop for a quick flip through the CDs and (high quality!) vinyl. The used stuff will likely have something you want at the right price and in general the small selection covers all weirdo/underground/punk basics no household should be without.
  • i misspoke about trulia. it is the streeteasy "app" for iphone which just added rentals this past week.

    nice feature.

i did just download the trulia app for iphone though. good stuff.
