Book Swap: Sunday 9/14 at Aji
Because basically I'm really bad about returning library books and always end up owing as much as it would have cost to buy the book...
Anyone want to start swapping books? I promise not to steal them! I've been flying through some reading this summer and would love to share the wealth in exchange for not spending $15 a week on new reading. Anyone?

well i would do it only if you promise to never give me my books back. Every so often I cull the herd and end up with 10 or so books that I have no need for/will never read/read and hated/never should have bought in the first place.
So if you, or anyone else, has some interesting books I would love to do a book for book barter. -
I am totally into it -- was thinking about organizing a book swap for Prospect Heights, but will be happy to participate in one across Flatbush. When and where?
-
donno! I'm feeling out interest atm...
-
I actually have a stack of books in my apartment I woudl gladly give away.
-
You should try a site called www.paperbackswap.com
-
I'm a big fan of bookswaps. I have a citywide YMCA membership and take my books to the Y in Chelsea near where I work where they keep a swap shelf for members. Maybe you can get some local business to set up a shelf, or even some libraries set up bookswap shelfs.
-
I might want to share some of my books as well, as long as you return the ones I want back. Let's talk about it.
-
I saw the other day the new bar on 9th st ? near CVS had a book swap notice written in chalk in front of their place. Didn't notice the date though.
-
I would definitely be down for a bookswap. Some books I might want back, others not so much.
-
Right, that happened last week sometime, and I didn't go. Perhaps it'll happen again. Funny how much books mean to some while there are some who would never keep a book in their house no less a library full!
-
what genre of books are we talking about? I have a lot of books that I wouldn't mind swapping and not getting back. But it's a lot of mystery, sci-fi, old chick lit and fantasy.

That sounds like the kind of books we are talking about... Things you read through but don't need to keep in your library. -
I use paperbackswap.com and its great. A new surprise arrives for me on a regular basis via mail and I get to get rid of books I don't want anymore.
-
Ok sounds like there's some interest in this. I wonder if I can get a bar to allow us to hang out for an hour after work one evening- we've got to devise a way so people that want their books back get them (like myself- some i dont mind giving away but some I want back!) Let me put some thought into it. Anyone have a suggestion of a place? I know we could probably do it in the courtyard in front of my apt as long as no one else is hanging out there that day, but if you guys want to make this into a more formal "meetup" thats fine with me!
-
i'd be interested to know more about this
we have tons of books at home that we would like to get rid of, mostly fantasy books from my husband's.

i've never tried it, but it sounds very much like www.bookmooch.com which i've been using for a while now. -
Ive never tried those site, I think I'd prefer something face to face, though. Its always nice to meet new neighbors
-
I agree with meeting face to face, plus some of my books are really old since I bought them used to begin with and while they are readable the covers have either fallen off or are coming off and I would feel weird mailing someone books in that condition.

I think Piero at AJI (9th street between 4th and 5th ave) would be open to us having a book swap there. If we do it before the weather gets cold we could set it up in the backyard there. What do you think? -

That sounds like a good idea!!
I can make up a "sign in/out sheet" for the books, something like
Book Title............ Original Owner......... Borrowed By
And then at least we have a record of who has what so if someone disappears we'll at least have a phone number to try to retrieve the books. I think we'll have to just try to be on the honor system here, folks, because I'm not chasing anyone down! In other words, don't swap any books that you REALLY would be upset to lose.
Veets- I know your husband plays at Aji so I assume you know Piero a bit- do you mind asking him about this? -

oh i agree about this too

while we are at it, anyone wants to swap cds or dvds too? -
I work for Random House and get 6-10 new books a week and I've been dying to do something with them. This sounds like a great idea. Count me in.
-
Isn't all of Park Slope a book swap? I leave out (and pick up) books all the time on the stoop.
(Just not when rain is in the forecast) -
This reminds me of a cool book swap system. We spent a week in a very remote tiny town last winter--no library, few stores, no hospital, etc. Anyway, a popular restaurant kept a nice collection of books. They had some sort of value system, but you couldn't just buy a book. You had to leave at least one for the collection and leaving a book got your more credit then money.

I live in Prospect Heights and getting to the bar between 4th and 5th on 9th Street is just too far.....I'd need to do this in PH or in North Slope. Any interest in that? Perhaps next weekend? I can offer the front yard of my house, if there's interest. Plenty of room and I have a couple of large folding tables I can bring out. Will even offer free lemonade to thirsty book traders...

I think you may be outnumbered- north slope is too far for me to carry all them darn books. I stil vote Aji or even Dram as it's got big tables in the back...I can check out Dram if anyone is into it. I was in there last Sunday around 1 and there was barely a soul in there. -
wait, when is this? i have a good amount of books i'd love to barter in exchange for new ones...

we're still discussing
I'm going to call Dram and Aji this weekend and see what I can figure out. -

I get lots of my books that way too.

Once I put a whole box of books out in front of my building. As soon as I turned my back, the super came and threw the box into the trash. He doesn't get it! I came right back out, pulled the box out and took it across the street to the corner outside of this little park and put a note up on craigs list. -

There used to be a paperback swap store on the Upper West Side. You took your old books there and got half the book value credit towards more books, and paid a little bit every time you purchased books...or something like that! -

I would be in also and if you like Bricktop I would drive over myself and would be happy to carpool over with a couple PH'ers I can fit 3 comfortably (4 if someone wants to sit in the middle)
