moving companies?

We used Brothers Moving and Storage on Atlantic and Underhill. We were very happy with them.

No idea why my message about Movers, not Shakers was attributed to "Guest" but I am indeed logged in.

when i moved from Miami to NYC, i got burned by using the cheapest local mover. when i moved from PH to PS two years ago, i decided to use the biggest mover with the most signs up everywhere. i used Moishe's. rates were fine, they were incredibly professional, and there were no hidden costs. next time i have to move, i'm not going to mess around with a small company. i'll probably stick with Moishe's or go with another one of the well-known companies with a "trackable" track record.

We moved from Carroll Gardens to PH about 1.5 years ago and used U. Santini, a small company based in Brooklyn. We had a complicated move (2 apts -> 1) and I'd been burned by some incompetent movers (The Right Move) earlier so I was nervous about it, but they did a great job and came in well under their estimate. I would definitely use them again.

watch out for the guys who put up posters with a big $18 on it.

the fine print says per hour per man, 3 man minimum. so i tried it late last year. i was only moving a small, sparsely furnished apartment, so i said 3 movers would do it. they insisted on sending 4. they also charged me for a truck, even though my move didn't require one. i was only moving from one apartment to another within the same building. they said they needed the truck to get there (i take the subway to work and don't see why they couldn't do the same.) knowing all this, i still thought they had a good price and didn't feel like hunting around anymore so i hired them anyway.

the surprises weren't over.

when they were done, i gave them what i considered to be substantial tips, considering they'd only worked a few hours, but they stayed in my house and argued with me that they usually get $10 per hour per person (as tip, on top of the $18 per hour per person charge) and wouldn't leave until i paid them that. i didn't, but did give them some more just to get them to leave.

once they were gone, i noticed that a few things were missing. i called the number and of course they denied they'd taken them. but i know for sure these things were in the apartment before they arrived because i'd just bought them and were not there when they left.
