Oo I'd love to know about this as well!

Gee, yea, no, there really isn't any way to just take the train out there and be in the thick of it. You really need a car, especially cause they're all spread out. Maybe if you took a bike....
-
maybe some have shuttle buses/vans from train stations?
-
How about the ones at hudson vally? I have never been but my friends did. You may be able to find way going there with metro north.
-
Yeah the vineyards are way to far to take the train. I've been to many (grew up out there) some are good, some are eh. But I know they do have bus tours that stop at each vineyard. Unfortunately I don't know the name of said tours. I would do a google search you'll find something.

It's not too far (take the train) and people out there run tours and will take you around to all the vineyards. It's a great time and an easy day trip.

you can always go to Bridge Urban Winery. they make their wines using north fork grapes, but have their tasting room under the Manhattan (I think) bridge.
Give it a google. -
Most of the north fork wineries are accessible by bike from either the Mattituck or Southhold LIRR stations. It's pretty fun to bike from winery to winery, and you can make a decent loop out of it.

There are some great vineyards out in Long Island. My wife and I go out there every year. Unfortunately, I don't really know of any way of getting there by train. I have seen the Hampton Jitney driving around there, however. So that might be an option, along with a bike.
The wineries ARE spread out, quite a bit, but if you are in good shape, you can bike to and from most of the better ones. You will probably end up covering a good 30 miles on your bike over the course of the day.
Some of our favorite wineries up there are Duck Walk, Pelligrini, Lens and Ospreys Dominion. -
I actually just took a trip a couple of weeks ago. I went to a great one - Macari Vineyards in Mattituck (North Fork). Here's their site: http://www.macariwines.com/index.ihtml?flash=yes
Good luck and have fun! -
Thanks all!

I went on a wine tour a couple weeks ago with Zog. It was awesome. Three vineyards on a big bus. They are doing another one including pumpkins sometime in October.
Meet Market also does them sometimes.
a couple years ago we went on one with north fork wine tours but they seem to have gone private.
I did some reaearch earlier this year and if I remember correctly, there is a BnB in Jamesport I think that is walking distance to like 5 wineries and a quick cab from the LIRR.
Please let us jknow what you end up doing!
