are you that lazy? SHOVEL AND SALT, PLEASE
while my boots may suck, I fell down 3 times (I am, admittedly, the barometer for ice on any sidewalk in the world) on the way to the B today from Sterling and Washington (well, my first wipeout was on Washington). the clear issue is that y'all homeowners/building owners don't bother shoveling and salting your front sidewalks.
yes, I'm looking into buying new boots (any recos for decent stores (or brands - help me please) in the 52nd street and 6th avenue manhattan vicinity??) but, quite frankly, it snowed on Saturday night. get your shit off the sidewalk.
thanks.

My block was bad too. I almost went down once despite wearing my hardiest snow boots--even good rubber tread is no match against a sheer sheet of ICE. I was thinking about calling 311 about it. Don't they fine people for not clearing their sidewalks?
BTW, my boots are Merrell Tundra Waterproof (here). They're very waterproof (great for stepping directly in ankle-deep icy puddles) and look reasonably normal if you cover the tops of them with your pants cuffs. Yes, I am too lazy to bring another pair of shoes to work and change. You can probably buy them in any of the Shoemania/David Z's type stores.
ETA: My boots are black, not pink. -

yes, they fine people for that crap.

I am for responsible home owners, but the truth is some are older and cannot work in the cold.
If you can be a good neighbor and help, that might be more constructive then sounding off without acknowledgement. Your options are such: do what is typical in this area and call 311, or be radical and ring their doorbell -
There are lazy businesses and organizations as well.
-St Teresa's of Avila - failed to shovel the rear (St Johns) end of their property or the length of Classon between St Johns and Sterling (all St Teresa's property. They also failed to shovel all last winter. As if it weren't bad enough they've let the back end of that property turn into an eyesore (graffiti, broken windows in the building, rusty fence).
-Those people who are building the condos at the corner of Classon and St Johns. They also failed to shovel all last winter.
I 311'ed them and will do it every time it snows if they don't shovel. Between the two of them, there is no clear stretch of sidewalk for me to get to Classon avenue.
And, honestly, if a homeowner is not able to do his or her own shoveling, I think its his/her responsibility to arrange for someone else to do it.
OK, that's my grouchiness for the day. -

Bullshit. If you are a homeowner and cannot clear the sidewalk yourself, you must have someone else do it, for a price if need be. Anything else is being lazy and/or cheap. It is part of the price of being a homeowner. There are no excuses here. -
That was me calling bullshit on the icy sidewalks.

Agreed, but no need for hostility. Homeowner and those with storefronts have a responsibility. Maybe I'm just the type that picks up a bottle off the street when I see it rather than walk right past it. Some of you (And I know the type) seldom lift your heads up when walking for fear that someone might say hello. You are the same that fight against impersonable large scale construction yet you are not personable. Try becoming more of a community and improve on this. Why not volunteer to shovel a neighbors property. I've done that before and I didn't ask for an acknowledgement or their consent -

Since you're such an altruist, how about if we post a list of unshoveled sidewalks next time it snows, and you can go shovel them! -

I'm sure you are capable of doing it yourself especially if you care about these unshoveled sidewalks and posting there existance. It doesn't bother me. I just avoid them -
Know where the hostility comes from? From almost falling down myself this morning. Broken bones are expensive for the uninsured; thank God I didn't slip and fall. No, I did not have time to knock and offer to shovel the sidewalk for the person. I will, in fact not likely to have such time until I am retired. Homeowners are, again, responsible for sidewalk maintenance. This is a legal responsibility as well as a neighborly one. If there is no superintendent, then the owner needs to arrange to have th sidewalk cleared by a third party, without fail. Waiting until someone sees it and offers to shovel it is not a reliable method of meeting one's responsibility on this point.
This has nothing to do with fighting Atlantic Yards or any of your other distracting points, Guest. It has to do with people doing what they're supposed to do, in a timely manner. -

Can you speak in english and not [redacted].
I am aware that a building owner is responsible as is for them to maintain their fucking sidewalks. Stop your whining and avoid them. Would you walk straight into a bus if you saw it coming? Avoid the unshoveled sidewalks or call 311 -
You should come to happy hour on wednesday.

Not interested in happy hour and I never brag about snuffing softies like yourselves.
The only ass kicking game you'll participate with me is how you'll get my big ass foot out of your rear -

There is more than one mod; I didn't make the change you're talking about.
You are more than welcome to complain about my failure to protect you from other members to the site admin. However, I'm not sure how you're going to PM him if you don't have an account. -

Stop treating everyone with special preference and do your job right or have DH replace you -

People like you give lurkers and guests a bad name. Go take a chill pill and bother people on Craig's List or something.

Know what, Guest? Emily's a really nice person who mods for free. No one else wants the job, because it largely consists of taking heat from unregistered guests when they flame the registered users. You mention community, but you don't seem to realize that this is a community, right here. I am your neighbor. So is everyone else here. Using inflammatory language and otherwise pressing peoples' buttons simply is bad manners, and isn't communication--it's a form of bullying.
If you want to have actual dialogue with people on this board, consider registering, being social, and playing by the same rules as everyone else.
Respectfully,
James -

I'm sorry, what egg have you hatched from?
I'm having a hard time with your username. Were you trying to be funny or is this emily with a pseudonym? -

James, A.G. isn't interested in any dialogue. His only motivation is to derail as many threads as possible from the original topic to HIM. That and to see his name in the "last post" column of as many threads as possible. We've been through this before. There's no point in arguing with him. The only solution is to ban him from the site. -

And how sure are you that I'm a him? Is it obvious? You must be perfect with your guessing. Do you do it for a living? I'm curious to know. See, It's not always about me -

Errr... back on track. I CAN'T avoid or walk around the unshovelled patches as they cover both sides of the block between my apartment building and the corner I need to walk to. Actually, the other direction isn;'t shovelled either, so the long way around the block isn't an option even if I felt like it.
I did call 311, and encourage others to do the same. -
with the amount of time this flamer is spending hurling about useless diatribes, s/he/it could have shovelled all the sidewalks in the neighborhood that needed it. now THAT would have been useful! and nice!
talk about community-building! -
thankfully, in my nighttime stroll around the 'hood to get the box-o-franzia, I only encountered one busted sidewalk -- park & underhill, the washington/sterling corner (I'm directionally challenged, sorry). and I haven't fallen anymore today. but some asshole in times square punched my boob. I'm having a lousy day.

I just unloaded on him. he was some dweeb working for chase's blink campaign. he was doing jumping jacks or some shit in the middle of the sidewalk. I'd just come through the king kong opening night drama (I had no clue - damn pilates studio on 8th ave) and this guy totally nailed me even though I kinda yelled ahead to inform him and his cohorts that there were actual pedestrians on 42nd street. oh well. I thought very seriously about having him arrested but could only think that it would take even LONGER to get home. which made me sad. but ow. poor boob. -
Somebody got the message...I heard the scrape of snow shovels outside my window starting at about 5:30 this morning.
*yawn* -
Well they sure didn't over by the Grand Army Plaza stop! Ice underneath slush! I almost broke something navigating that! Grr!
