Snow — Brooklynian

Snow

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
There's nothing like waking up to the first lovely light snowfall. I'm not sure who was more excited, me or my crazy cat who loves to play in the snow on my roof-deck. He woke me up scratching the windows and hollering to be let out.
Of course, I'd rather it be 60-85 degrees, but if it's gonna be this cold I'm happy to have a bit of snow.
No doubt I'll be cursing the snow in a month or two. For now, Mookie & I just love it to death.

  • I love it. I love it. I love it.

Having recently moved from Minneapolis, I was beginning to feel homesick. This makes me feel better.
  • I love it, too- I was throwing snowballs all the way to the grocery store... my wife thought that I was nuts... I was almost hoping to get in to a snowball fight with some neighborhood kids.

Can we add snowball fighting to the penthalon (or more accurately,... heptathalon)?

I'd love to, we just need to be ready to move when the right conditions exist!

That, and we need to figure out how to score a snowball fight... :?

And you do know that you're at a disadvantage...? I'm am Minnesotan, after all...

    Teams?

If we can get Brookfetish to come, we can do Minnesotans against Brooklynites (me and Candicissima). Alafairnadia- do you know if there any other Floridians here (although talk about being at a disadvantage)?

I was born in Milwaukee. anyone from a combo flyover and warm-state background?

Glutton for punishment! You wanna try your luck against TWO Minnesotans?! And where would this happen- the park?

Sounds good. We should text each other next time it snows.

I hear tomorrow's supposed to be a big one! :)

let's hit the park tomorrow night. mulled wine, snow balls, broken knee caps -- sounds like my idea of fun. I'll mull the wine.

Awesome! I'm working overnight tonight, but I have tomorrow off.
Ground rules: no rock or ice cores to the snowballs unless A.G. shows up.
  • If you are serious about doing that, please take off my hands half a box of Franzia (yes, I said box) leftover from when I recently made Glühwein (German mulled wine). Unfortunately, I am busy tomorrow night so the mulled wine-maker would have to pick it up from me tonight.

Glühwein!! Do you have a good receipe that you would be willing to share? I get very nostalgic this time of year for the one winter I spent in Vienna...
  • I'd be down for it! I can have my wife make some gloog or glug, however you spell it! It's Swedish, dontchaknow? Oh, ya! You betcha! Text away when the snow falls, my friend!
  • Well, this isn't exactly a recipe, but here's what I did.

Take one box of Franzia wine leftover from summertime sangria-related plans (that never came to fruition). Put something like half of it in a big kettle. (Note: I used a thick iron kettle. Bad idea--it was really hard to keep it from boiling because it holds heat so well. Use a thinner metal pot.)

Add 1/3 - 1/2 cup sugar, 3-4 cinnamon sticks, two oranges wedges, some chunks of lemon peel, and about 12-15 whole cloves. Heat for as long as you like, making sure it doesn't boil (because that will burn the alcohol off, and where's the sport in that?). You might want to add a little more sugar than I said, once you taste it. Fish out all the stuff with a tea strainer before serving.

Um, so this is pretty much guesswork. But it tasted awfully good when I made it before, only I wish I'd had more time to let it "steep."

if no one else is interested in it, I may skip it since I would end up drinking it myself (I'm not the brightest bulb).

Indeed, what is the fun in that?! The Swedes have it right- gluug is similar, but usually you add a fortified wine such as a port to give it a little more kick! Some also add a neutral hard liquor, too, such as vodka, but it's all fun and games until someone loses a liver...

I was supposed to keep that thing? it was weighing me down ...
  • I think some German versions add brandy, but I didn't have any around and it still basically tasted right to me...

I think I'm going to play the role of the sniper on this one...

...if you should pass my building on Underhill, and I spy you in my sights...

I shall note that I have decent aim.
