What's a Baby Naming Ceremony?
Subject: What's a Baby Naming Ceremony?
I have to go to one next week and I have no idea what's involved, type of gift (other than typical new baby presents), or what tradition this is based on.What I DO know: The grandma's throwing it- big, formal, in some fancy place in Westchester....
Please advise.

I think this really depends on the cultural origins of the family.
We had one for my baby sister when she was born. Family is West African. Very well-attended. We prayed together then blessed the baby, passed a glass of alcohol around which we all drank from then poured libations for the ancestors.
The rest of the time was devoted to people oohing and aahing over her- just like a formal introduction of the baby to friends and family.
I don't recall gifts but ask to be sure. -
Its similar to a christening for Christians or a Bris for Jews. Think of it as an introduction of the new life and a celebration of the power and spirit embodied in the new name.
Not sure what the original cultural origin was, but the ones I have been to were from mixed religious (Yoruban and Christian) families. -
All I can speak of is from a jewish perspective. A baby naming is a reformed jews introduction of a female baby to the world. Its when she formally receives her jewish name and inrtoduction to the jewish faith. There is no set age to when this is done (like a bris). I say reform jews because orthodox jews don't typically do this nor do many have a bat-mitzvah for girls.

Great info- thanks! I think they're Jewish and the baby's a girl, so this would make sense...
Anyone else know if I should do the gift thing? Although, I'm playing it safe and bringing one anyway, but is there a baby naming appropriate gift? -
just give what you would for any newborn. Personally I loved when people got me clothes for when my boys were a few months to a year older. Chances are good that they already have enough clothes for right now.

Good enough- thanks much all.

How did it go? My wife and I just had a lovely baby girl, and we will be facing the challenge and joys of setting up a baby naming for a Jewish girl with a diverse group of friends and family.

Anyone have experience with great baby namings? -
Good question. We just had one a few months ago for our child Stella, and I wrote about it: http://brooklynbabydaddy.blogspot.com/2008/07/baby-naming-ceremony.html
Honestly, it's a wonderful ceremony, and we were thrilled to be able to do it. A great chance to introduce the whole family to the little one, and the little one to the WHOLE family, so to speak.
