where to buy a papyrus plant?

if i were looking to buy a papyrus plant, is there a local place i should go? does anyone know how much such plants cost? there is a long & needless backstory here, but suffice to say that if they are reasonably priced and not too hard to find (i'd even venture to manhattan if necessary), i'm in the market for one.

  • I vaguely recall seeing some at the farmers market at GAP yesterday.
  • don't you have to have a pond or such like to grow them in?
  • GAP plant guys (new leaf?) have them. $30 but you might get them down to 25. You need to keep them really wet, but not necessarily submerged. A cache pot without a hole will do. Not cold hardy so bring it in for winter or let it go. If you find the dwarf variety anywhere please post that info.

Yup... the New Leaf guys had them at Union Square today. They'll probably have them at GAP if it doesn't get rained out.
  • If you ever go upstate...I just saw some at the farm stand/greenhouse just across the NY/Mass border in Great Barrington . . . on sale.

Next May, go to the BBG plant sale -- they have papyrus, and water hiacynth, and water lilies. . . I always want to make a pond and grow these things! A friend of mine makes "ponds" out of old satellite dishes with little photocell fountains to circulate the water...but he lives in the country waaay south of here....
    (/sigh)

tajmb, have you sucessfully wintered over papyrus inside a bklyn apt?
