Walking your cat — Brooklynian

Walking your cat

Does anybody take their cats out for walks on a leash? I'm writing an article about the practice and would love to talk to someone in the area about their experiences! I took mine out as a kitten with little success...

  • I've tried, but they freak out big time and seem to really really hate it.
  • I've heard of one breed that seems to take to walking on a leash - pixie-bobs.
  • Took my house cat to the back yard to look at the birds and the trees. All she did was cry....
  • Subject: He walks me...

I walk my cat on an almost daily basis. Started about 4 months ago. He has a very strong personality, and pretty much demanded that he be taken out. I'm sure he'd prefer not to be on a leash, but he seems to understand the deal. He doesn't go out if he's not on the leash. I get lots of attention, sometimes not so great, but it makes him a much happier cat.
  • No but I walk my turtle. Then someone stepped on him and he died.
  • I WISH we could walk our cat. He's awesome, but freaks the freak out when we bring him outdoors (in a cat carrier) to go to the vet. He HATES the outdoors, and even peed on my gf once in the car from the stress. :(
  • I tried to take mine out in our back yard with a leash, but he crouches down on his belly, cries and refuses to move. Then he figured out how to slip the harness, so no more outdoors for him.
  • i see them around nolita and lower east side. folks walking their cats.
  • a friend took her cat out for a walk and he burned his feet on the sidewalk and ended up taking a long time to recover, his paw pads were all worn down.
  • We take our girl cat on a leash a bit. She does not walk all the time, sometimes we sit on a leash. But when we get going we go...until a truck comes or she decides she is done.
  • I tried (well my hubby tried) to take our cat to Prospect park.

The cat was scared out of his mind and really hated the whole thing.

I suspect this is because cats prefer to have their own "territory" (which they tend to constantly enlarge and inspect), but they wouldn't just venture into some scary unknown.
  • I have a pretty large outdoor deck so my guys are used to having the door open and used to the outdoors. In fact, a pretty much nightly ritual is taking them outside (in my arms, no leash) to catch the moths once I turn on the outdoor light - they love to eat bugs! I also put them on a leash and take them out on the deck. They love that but once they get outside of the environs of the apartment and the deck, forget it. Scream, piss, hiss.

    you are mistaken

    those are nyu film students

walking their drunken dutch girlfriends home
  • I semi walk my cat. he doesn't go along on the leash like a dog would. i usually let him off the leash and let him walk around in front of the house and sometimes in the park. he doesn't go too far and (usually) comes back when i call him.
  • I tried to put a harness on my old cat and walk her and she did NOT react well at all. If I remember correctly I ended up with claw marks all over my arms and cat pee in my lap.
  • I have tried several times to walk my two cats. I have harnesses and leashes for both of them. If they see me pick up the harness and leash, they vanish. If I do manage to put the harness and leash on, they do fantastic impressions of a brick on a string. I first tried when they were kittens and persevered for ages, then gave up. They're just not interested in the walk thing. They enjoy chasing each other around the apartment, and like letting the dog chase them too. They get plenty of exercise, just not outdoors.
  • I walk my cat and he's so happy to be outside that he puts up with it. he bounces along. If I don't tend to him, he goes running down driveways and sometimes ends up in trees! I think it's worth trying if you can tell that your cat would REALLY like to be outside. You just have to be careful. (but like anything...)

I don't get the nyu film reference or the dutch reference. ??

(even as a joke... :) ) what am i missing?
  • not a a misogynist metaphor about cats

    rather

    lightly veiled humor as uber-commentary

about the current state of the once-wild lower east side

    now nyu dorms
  • yeah i realized that. i mostly didn't get the dutch part but maybe the east village has been overtaken by the dutch. ?

    thanks -
  • Thank you all so much for your responses! I've been trying to send out some pm's - maybe they're not working (or you don't want to chat about it further!) but if you do (especially if you've had success), please send me an email at [email protected]

    Hope to hear from you!

    Thanks,

    Barbara
